Do we disqualify peace officer candidates for other activities that might indicate a person does not follow rules set by society? Do we ask on employment applications about, say, domestic violence? Public intoxication? Check fraud? Reckless driving?

It seems to me we should be less concerned about the manner in which a candidate chooses to unwind after a hard day at work and more about whether he or she shows a dedication to upholding the U.S. Constitution, a history of public service, and the ability to remain calm and rational in high-stress situations.

Phil doesn't get invited to many parties or have many friends.

@2 - not true.

Cops are people too. A little cannabis to unwind after work would do a world of good in one of the most high stress jobs there is. It would likely make them better cops, more relaxed and less likely to over-react when dealing with the public, making them less feared, more respected, more like "peace officers".

I've thought for years about how cops could trully benefit from pot use. We all need happy cops, and after some unfortunate incidents they could use a pick me up. People don't smoke pot and go commit crimes,they are happy and mellow. Sounds like a great description of a cop to me.

Like the article says, pot is still illegal federally. Under the Assimilated Crimes Act, LE enforce USC and RCWs. It puts us in a compromising position to partake in a federally controlled substance when we are supposed to be enforcing federal law. That said, it's nice to see our state stand up to the federal government, to say we're gown ups, and we can govern ourselves. We don't need men thousands of miles away in the other Washington, deciding how we're going to live or lives. We're hopefully setting a precedent for states rights. When it's legal federally we'll go home, get high, and eat way too many donuts after work!!

I agree and it would also help us on downtime in the military. There would be a lot less dui's and we would be able to relieve a some stress.

Please wait...
