The photos add a haunting counterpoint. Growing up in Texas, it seemed the whole world was divided between garish neon storefronts and the bland industrial brown out back, full of ducts and conduit like a Terry Gilliam movie. The mall is the endpoint of the capitalist orgy, and it is a fundamental disappointment. In the end, it's just brown.

The reality of the "deals" is that most Black Friday sales aren't great. Look at that sweater or pair of jeans you buy for 40% off. Add that 40% back to the price and ask yourself if anyone would ever buy those jeans at that price in the first place.

Ten million years ago, when I was young and shopping involved chandeliers and a dining room, you really could get deals on "Black Friday". Then the marketing folks got ahold of it. Now it's just something for the simple-minded to engage in.

black Fridays a hassle. dangerous bastards on the road and car prowlers aloof! an easier way to get discount prices on name brand product is to hop on the Amtrak to Oregon and shop on memorial day weekend. Nike air shoes for 13 bucks. new books for 5 bucks. Wilson leather coats for 80 bucks. I suggest Lincoln city for the best deals.
