Putting a Machiavellian master political operative on the National Security Council is a move that only a Machiavellian master political operative would have thought of in the first place. There was no way the NSC could have fulfilled its mission while poisoned by Bannon's presence. Trump was embarrassed by his idiotic selection of that nutcase Flynn, so he pretty much had to go for someone considered "normal" in McMaster. That choice wasn't a military coup. As for McMaster, he is just doing a bit of housekeeping, taking out the trash, and putting things back in order -- nothing radical, just the way it was for decades before Flynn.

We can talk about a military coup, hard or soft, when Trump is taken out (hard or soft) by one of his former military appointees. Until then, maybe we can speak of them as a few voices of reason and people who know what they're doing in this White House infestation of bozos, cronies, royal offspring, newbies, and anarchistic saboteurs.

Lol, you think Putin would allow that.
4
The troubling part is that at this stage I would welcome some rational experienced Constitutional military people to help Trump.
5
Man, talk about Bizarro World... here we are, cheering the military, the ones who kill 200 civilians in a bombing raid, the ones who've been bombing Doctors Without Borders, and the ones who've been kicking their hand-me-down LRADs and sonic attack gear to li'l bro police depts across the country.... we're cheering them as "rational, stability, return to order". Fucking hell.

I mean sure, we have narcissistic racists running the show, and a creepy conspiratorial nutjob who wants to foment a "clash of civilizations" (much to the pleasure of ISIS/Daesh), attempting to insinuate himself into all decision-making (remember, ⊥rump was furious when he realized that Bbbannon had had him sign an EO that put Bbbannon on the NSC... sneaky tart!).

All of this is mind-boggling stuff, really.

A soft coup? Why not, why should all the fun conspiracy theories be right wing nut theories, can't we in the center and left have some too? Coup or not, this is welcome news, Bannon is about as scary a human being as there is in modern day America, a throwback to Barry Goldwater.

Oh, and btw Stranger staff, Firefox is telling me that your comment sign in isn't secure, just giving you a heads up as I've never gotten this message before.
7
@4, i feel you.
8
Bannon has saber rattled towards China so I am thinking his reassignment may be an overture to Beijing before talks. He might also be promoted again if the orange one fails in negotiations.
9
Returning to the status quo is a military coup? A "soft coup" (whatever that means)? OK...
10
I can't imagine Bannon can conquer his morning-after jitters sufficiently to buzz into conversations in any kind of timely manner.

@4, @7

Outside the US, it is quite common for the secular left to align with the military against the religious right.

Erdogan's rise to power in Turkey was a reaction to the Kemalist leftist-secularist-military alliance, and its suppression of religion (i.e. Islam, particularly outside Istanbul).

The Egyptian counterrevolution (the military coup that removed the Green Revolution's democratically elected Muslim president) was carried out by an alliance of Egyptian leftists and the Egyptian military.

This is really not an uncommon thing. Leftists the world over are quite willing, even eager, to root for the military when the military looks like it will be a convenient means to their ends.
12
Hold your horses. This is not a soft cup by any means, underwire still very much intact.
My initial reaction was identical to that of GS @ 1: Bannon may have some stains on his hands and his removal looks like an attempt to tell the FBI, “I didn’t know.”
13
Men who successfully kill masses of people as a job...

...Over Bannon?

Fuck yes, they're less scary, and also less likely to provoke a war or two.
14
You're seeing what you want to see. This is just another distraction, and it's working. it means nothing.
15
Headline ends with a question mark, so I'm going to go with the answer to the question being a "no".
16
Thank god warmonger Hillary didn't get elected.
Now we can all sleep well.
17
Meh, "soft" is sure doing the lifting on this one. Ain't any kind of coup until they make some smidge of a move to evade civil authority and consolidate their ability to do do. Have something in mind?

(Can we now discard that article people were Facebooking about how the Muslim ban was a headfake to distract us from the rl srs bsnss, Bannon as a principal? Or is there a new layer of metaheadfake theory now?)

There are a lot of fish swimming around this Bannon thing. But a simple explanation is that White House Council Donald McGahn advised the Trump people that Bannon's people on the Security Council would lead to jail time, and they needed to shut things down before they placed themselves at risk.

Josh Marshal has been covering this, and it's a confusing story. But one possibility is that Flynn had his deputy Cohen-Watnick start combing through the intelligence files on Trump-Russia connections, in order to get a lead on what they would be up against in the Senate. Flynn resigned but his deputy continued at the insistence of Bannon and against the wish of McMaster. McGahn heard what was up and told Cohen-Watnick to stop immediately before the investigation got Trump impeached. Cohen-Watnick responded by calling Rep. Sam Nunes to the White House in the middle of the night and dumping the file on him. McGahn then may have told Trump that Cohen-Watnick's games were a ticket to jail, and he needed to get all political operatives off the NSC immediately.

Just one possibility. Nothing confirmed yet. But imagine Trump getting an earful from his own Lawyer-- it's the sort of thing that would make him take action fast.

Trump may now be answering to two masters. If the Russians actually do have enough goods for him to be totally compromised, the US intelligence/military also has that by now.
20
Made up terms, bullshit conspiracy theories, headline that ends with a question mark, and nonsensical gibbering.

Just need some casual misogyny or bafflingly incorrect and opinionated "science" and my Mudede bingo card will be complete.
21
@18 Other than the first name slip of Rep. Devin Nunes, this is probably the best explanation I've read about this. There is ample evidence that many, if not most, of the Trumpistas at the White House are in way over their heads. The stupidity is overwhelming at times, appearing to break laws with complete ignorance. Running a hatemonger website doesn't require much intelligence, so there's little reason to expect Bannon to be brilliant. (also not hard to make money at Goldman-Sachs when the law is in your favor and you've been handed a portfolio) This whole thing has been an amateur imitation of the last days of Nixon.
22
Y'all silly.
23
all of these behind-doors conspiracy theories are equally fruitless as far as proof. nothing has actually happened yet.
24
"Soft coup" may be a touch dramatic, but Charles' account of the intra-office politics in the White House is spot on, and it's consistent with the accounts of insiders.

This particular battle - adults vs toddlers - has been going on since inauguration day, with Priebus and Pence being on the former side and Trump and Bannon on the latter. Bannon has no allies in the White House except Trump.

Please wait...
