Pretend your "aw shucks, I'm a wronged boy who didn't mean it" act all you want. Reference the number of judgmental things you said in your one short post- that she should live in poverty like everyone else, that she should not be dependent on men for once in her life, that she's prostituting herself when she doesn't have to, etc- all about someone who never claimed she had no other options in the first place and who did not write a letter asking about her financial situation. You jumped on the opportunity to show your judgement and disdain and you chose the language to do so - and yes the implication is that the only acceptable sex work is when it's an economic necessity and not a better choice than eating ramen and going in debt which is what most people do and what YOU suggested she do. This is literally you judging her life choices, and the word choice does show disdain, and moreover, you know this as does every single person who reads your words. So yes, I hear what you are saying. I'm telling you that I know you are lying.

Sporty @100: "Prostitute" isn't in itself a problematic word; all it indicates is that one is not woke enough to use the term "sex worker." "Prostituting herself" is a problematic phrase, which indicates an attitude that she is lowering her own value by choosing this work. And I see no defense of your "tourist along for a thrill ride" phrase, interesting. I guess there's no way to deny it accurately revealed your contempt for a woman who had the gall to choose sex work over other alternatives, like malnutrition and/or failing her classes.

105

@104 "herself"
her SELF. So an act that a sex worker upthread told us is just work, doesn't even feel like sex to her, involved selling someone her S E L F ? (Thus a woman is not more than a pussy?!) That is so infinitely shallow, mean-spirited, abusive, and ignorant.

Why would someone do this here? Why would someone want to "signal" to us that they are infected with these sick thoughts? Surely there is someplace where adults who are emotionally immature and psychologically unhealthy go to bond with each other, but instead this one wants a woke community's negative attention? What must such a person's life be, to have a need for negative attention?

Sorry, Sportlandia, at the risk of piling on I’ll add my voice to the chorus. You love to use insinuation and insult in your comments and then come back with, “Whoooo? Meeee? You’re twisting my words!” No. You’re words speak loud and clear. Stop Trumpifying and own up to it, man. There’s no law against being sexist or a dick in the comments section. Where would Batman be without the Joker?

@105 Great point, Corky! We've all heard this "separate but equal" idea before, I think it's a tremendous idea. SLOG would be better off if those "other" people with their "science words" just went somewhere where you couldn't see or here them. I know you've only barely contributed to this community but it's obvious: this is your space and you are the decided of who gets to stay and who should be deported. After all, there are surely separate and equal spaces for the "thems". I mean, I guess it's ok if some of them are here - as long as they stay in they're place. Jesse Helms couldn't have argued it any better himself.

Why am I not shocked that that's your attitude as you simultaneously label yourself "woke". You're that same piece of shit white person that's been arguing for your own personal cultural supremacy and you're fucking Alex P Keaton 2.0. Congrats, I'm literally jealous because I'm sure it feels great to be so fucking smug and self satisfied. You're better than me, it's true. You're an elevated, woke human; programmed from birth by gaia sheself, in tune with the harmonic resonances between our souls and the cosmos and uniquely situated to treat all people with dignity and respect (except, you know, anyone who doesn't agree with you precisely on everything, you hyprocrtical boot lick coward).

@104 Why would I need to defend it? I didn't think "(white) college girl who told all her girlfriends about her escorting on the side" was such a stretch of the imagination, and precisely zero people have argued the opposite. Yes, I think she's sex working tourist the same way people from upper middle class backgrounds have been touristing working class life for generations; she's basically a variation of Trust Fund Boho Freegan. It's an easy thrill she can step into and out of at will; it's a blatant exercise of privilege in an industry that a vast majority of participants have almost no other opportunities and are incapable of escaping. Meanwhile, she has a degree, is presently in med school, and a non-pimp boyfriend who would (per her estimation, at least) support her financially. So, as you are SO desperate to box me into a linguistic corner so you rationalize your opinion of me, let me tell you: Don't bother lying. Just acknowledge you'll take any stance on anything just for the purposes of disagreeing with me. It only took like two days for curious to argue for full on racial segregation in order to prove their point that prostitute is a worse word that sex worker; how long until I have you arguing that some life is unworthy of life?

108

Sporty, the point is that no one else seems to care that she's chosen this job despite having other options. This is something that disturbs YOU. Yes, she is privileged. Most of the people who write in are. I can't tell you how often I roll my eyes at someone in a marriage in a rich country without financial problems writing in to bitch about how they can't get some specific sexual kink as if it's a real problem in the larger scheme of the world. But that's what this forum is about, mostly- it's what we are all here talking about.

For some reason, it troubles you that this woman chooses sex work when she doesn't have to. There are no rules here about staying on topic and if you want to talk about it bothers you when people choose sex work, go right ahead. But it's not relevant to her question, and she never claimed otherwise- she didn't say that it's the only possible way she could pay for school so all you are doing here is pointing out the obvious. Yes, she chooses sex work. Yes, perhaps she enjoys it and gets a thrill from it. What does that have to do with anything? This bothers you and so you are stating the obvious as if it is an accusation and then insulting her for it. Yes, you are judging her and yes you are insulting her and yes you are aware that you are doing both.

@107 Sportlandia
C'mon man. Is it too much to ask to not (as @106 DonnyKlicious observed) provoke (aka troll) people?

Everyone would love to interact with you a lot more if you didn't try so hard to make doing so unpleasant at every opportunity.

I'm not taking the bait to respond to the things you made up in @107. Maybe take a deep breath?

I'll pledge to stop fighting now whether or not you do. I own that it takes two to have a fight.

110

@109 It's not too much to ask for you to shut the fuck up. This is your ballgame, if you wanna go home, be my guest, but don't act like you're an innocent bystander here. People who respond to my ideas get treated with respect, shit-for-brains dunderheads like you who question my right to be here get insulted as long as I have the energy for it. You should be ashamed of yourself.

@108 It does not trouble me that women (or men, I suppose) choose sex work. This all started because you (et al) assumed that the word "prostitute" meant that I hated sex workers or something. When I explained otherwise, you basically just said "I don't believe you". So fuck you. Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you.

111

@110 Sportlandia
You don't mind being seen saying obviously false things? For example, anyone can see I (regrettably, I will now agree) questioned your MOTIVATION (not your "right") to beHAVE as you do (not "be") here.

And for pete's sake, I can't help myself, I dare you to show us where (quoting you @107) I "argue[d] for full on racial segregation". (LOL.)

Please tell me you don't really believe such things you say about people, please tell me that you're just doing that to those you feel deserve to (quoting you @107) "get insulted". I sincerely do hope you're just being insulting, because I don't want you to be an insane person, as that would be a nightmare for you I expect.

Speaking of painful, being insulting can't have true joy in it for you either.

I've wearied of rightwingers twisting words and making up things before; there's just no point and no end to (and no joy in) unpacking a firehose of such claims, and it soon drains the energy out of me and discussions and communities.

112

Well I'm not going to recount your whole thread history here, but if you go back and read your original post in this thread (it's among the first ones here) you'll see that you are already insultingly pointing out that the LW could do other work than sex work as if anyone ever contradicted the obvious fact that it is a choice. The opposition is to your language, but also to the fact that you have a problem with sex work as a choice in the first place- all of which is in your very first post before anyone else here arguing with you had even commented.

Also, yes you are lying and yes I don't believe a word you say.

113

"Don't call me a pet," says person who insist words don't matter.

114

Sporty @107: "Meanwhile, she has a degree, is presently in med school, and a non-pimp boyfriend who would (per her estimation, at least) support her financially."

Where are you reading this? On the contrary, she says that stopping sex work "would involve moving house and getting some probably more stressful and time consuming job in my final year of med school."

You know full well that there have been plenty of times that I've agreed with you when you haven't been wrong.

And please re-read the thread if you think people are objecting to the fact that you used the word "prostitute." We're objecting to your belief that her choosing sex work over other options makes her a bad person, as you described more fully @107.

115

Personally, I think the world would be a much better place if ALL sex workers had other options, could quit whenever they wanted, and didn't despise every moment of their jobs (as most of us don't). That was what distubed me: the fact that Sporty appears to see it the other way round.
