Meet Clarise Grzenkowicz. At 95 years old, she's pouring me a $2 draft beer at the tavern she owns, the Maplewood in Alpena, Michigan. Clarise has been pouring beer for—get this—74 FRICKIN' YEARS at this exact spot. The Maplewood first belonged to her parents, and it's been open for more than 90 years. It was even running during Prohibition, when it was a dance hall. Clarise took over the place in 1940 and continues to work there to this very day. She invited me to come sing karaoke on Wednesday. I tried to tip her five bucks for my $2 beer. She refused and said she hasn't accepted a tip, EVER, in her years behind the bar. I asked her what the best part of bartending was, and she shrugged, smiled, and said, "Well, I like people, and I think people like me." recommended
