Olivia Schmidt
Cocktailer/server, College Inn Pub, 4006 University Way NE (U-District), 634-2307.

God bless the College Inn--very few divey neighborhood bars have this much genuine warmth about them. From the memorial plaques above the fireplace (honoring beloved regulars who've passed away) to the congenial dispositions of owners She Wilson and Anders Lorenson, everything about the pub is comforting and humble. Most of the employees have been on board for years, but Olivia is a newbie whose biggest challenge is learning the names of all the College Inn's loyal regulars.

Have you worked in a bar before?

"No--and I've only been here two months."

How did you get the job?

"I used to come down here all the time, and one day they put up a Help Wanted sign. I didn't get the job when I applied, but then the owner called me a few weeks later and offered me the job."

You seem happy here.

"Oh yeah, I like the people who come here and the owners are really, really great."

I love that this is a University District bar, but it somehow repels the frat-boy contingent.

"Nope, we don't get too many of those. And when they do come in, we don't really treat them that well. They come up to the bar and make a lot of noise, but we just ignore them."

What's the biggest challenge you've had to deal with? You guys definitely run your asses off here.

"At first it was keeping tabs straight--who's getting what and whether they've paid for it--but after a while it just got easier. I don't really have any complaints. One thing that's hard is the fact that a lot of these people have been coming here for a long time. Remembering all the regulars' names is almost impossible."

You have to associate them with what they drink--like, "There's Michael, AKA Mr. Pabst-Blue-Ribbon-with-a-shot-of-Jack."

"Hmm... I do tend to remember what they drink, but I always forget the names. I'll try that."
