Adam Miller
Bass player and backing vocalist for Seattle's the Vogue.
EVENT: The Vogue celebrates the release of their debut EP, As Brass and Satin, with Sean Na Na and the Slaves, at the Breakroom on Sun Nov 12.

Why are you doing a CD release party so long after the CD was actually released?

"Hmmm. That's a really strange question. It's only been a few months. The record came out right before we went on tour, and it's only recently picked up a lot of airplay and promotion around town."

How do you feel about all the hype your band has received?

"We're very satisfied. We feel that our work is finally starting to get recognized. I think we're really beginning to overcome the initial perceptions that people had of us."

What were those perceptions?

"That our music has no substance, and it's all based upon who we are and how we dress."

Kenneth Cole or Skechers?

"[Laughs.] Miu Miu."

Do you believe that your relatively young ages played a role in the initial perceptions people had of you?

"People are definitely surprised when they see how much thought we put into our music, and that we have a goal--that we try to challenge ourselves instead of opting for the easy way out. We make music that we want to hear."

How old were you when you started playing with the Vogue?

"I was 19."

How old does that make you now?

"Twenty-one. I'm the oldest member. I'm the mom."

What's your favorite song on the record?

"'p.s. i read your diary.' Because it's the most melodic to me."

How important is melody?

"Very, very, very important. All the instruments in our band are used for melodic purposes. Except for the drums. Actually, the drums are used for melody sometimes as well."

Why did K. C. (the keyboard player) leave your band?

"He was too busy with school and his other band, Seldom. He's still playing the release party with us. The Vogue has always basically just been camp for him, whereas with us it's always been reality."

What would you like to see happen with this CD?

"I would like to see it distributed in other countries and have more people take note of it."

What song were you listening to when you first had sex?

"'Open Wide,' by Long Hind Legs. It was very fitting."
