Matthew Troy
Guitarist and vocalist for Track Star.
EVENT: Track Star plays the Paradox with Seldom, Aden, and Aveo on Sat March 24.

So, you're playing but the new record isn't out?

"Right."

Why do you tour so much without releasing records?

"It's just sort of worked out that way. We would get asked to go out touring with people. Imperial Teen asked us. We did a week with Stereolab. A while back we were working on songs for a new record and then nobody really wanted to put it out. I think Track Star just has bad timing. And then every time we give someone our record, they end up getting fired or quitting. Maybe there's a curse."

What is the new record going to be like?

"It's not gonna be as long as Communication Breaks. It's going to sound a little cleaner. That's a dumb thing to say. Wyatt has been doing all the work on the recording and engineering, and just because he's more experienced, it's going to sound a lot better. The other one was our first big full record, so we just kind of put everything we had on it, making it like a collection of short stories as opposed to a novel.... This record will hopefully be a novel. We're still trying to nail down who's going to put it out. We're hoping we can get it out in early fall."

Is there a throughline then? Thematically?

"I would hear stuff early on, like Track Star sings songs about girls and what to do with them--like Sleater-Kinney for boys, or whatever. I guess I've never been too into that. Wyatt and I do the writing together and I think we're both in better places. We're both in healthy relationships, so I don't think this record's going to be as lovesick. We're not intentionally moving away from that--it's just going to be more melodic and creepy."

Are you going to be doing mostly new songs at the show?

"The Communication Breaks stuff is really old, and what we've been playing is mostly newer. Mostly stuff that's not been recorded."

Are the songs happy?

"I guess some of them are pretty upbeat. It still sounds like Track Star. I guess we're just in a different space than we were back then: I'm not angry anymore, and it's a weird thing getting older. It's not like we've taken an "I love my baby" approach to it or anything. There might be a little less screaming than there used to be. There are still going to be some loud parts."
