The Paris of Daumier, the great caricaturist, is the same as Balzac's Paris. It wears refined hats and pinstripes, but it teems with thieves, snitches, double-dealers, opportunists, prostitutes, and naifs. There is only one real moral code: Do not be one of the naifs. This print (only $100!) will be one of hundreds of works—dating from the 15th century to 2009, offered by dealers from around the country—at the Seattle Print Fair Saturday and Sunday (Feb 13–14) at Davidson Galleries. Sifting through prints is one of the great pleasures of life. Keep an eye out for a 17th-century scene in which a guy playing a flute has pants made of snakes (Nicolas Cochin, The Temptation of St. Anthony) and a Rembrandt self-portrait subtitled "with Air of Grimace." recommended
