We can argue Andy Coe's noodle-heavy excess, but we can't argue his excess of talent. Corral the guitarist within the right format and he'll elevate every musician onstage with him. He might never get the props he truly deserves—at least not in these pages (blame the aforementioned overloaded soloing in his poorly named solo project). But with Blue Scholars or McTuff—reined in by swing-heavy syncopation or players with chops to match his own—Coe is a real-life guitar hero.
