Depression gets a bad rap—it ruins relationships, it ruins lives, blah, blah, blah. But depression does a lot of good in the world, too. Just look at music: If it weren't for depression, if it weren't for lonely nights and alcohol and broken hearts, we wouldn't have some of the greatest pieces of music ever written. Tom Waits never would've penned "Christmas Card from a Hooker" if he were happy. Hell, he probably wouldn't have written 80 percent of his songs! Joy Division, Sunny Day Real Estate, Bruce Springsteen, Wilco... they've all been depressed, and we've all benefited from it. So yay depression!
