In the early morning of Saturday, March 10, as Capitol Hill nightclubbers emptied onto the streets, police swarmed the block of Pike Street stretching between 10th Avenue and Broadway, responding to two separate and simultaneous blasts of gunfire.
According to Seattle Police Department reports, at 2:02 a.m., the SPD responded to "shots fired [on] the 1500 block of Broadway." Police nearly collided with a speeding gray Chevy Avalanche, which upon further inspection was found to be occupied by a shooting victim. Upon exiting the car, a bullet dropped onto the pavement from a "superficial bullet wound" in the victim's left calf.
There is speculation that this shooting was preceded by an incident at Sugar, the gay dance club that looks something like a Stanley Kubrick sci-fi movie, on Pike Street. Sugar security manager John Rogers says his security team had broken up several fights that night—and the shooting victim claims to have been there earlier in the evening. Rogers reports that the Sugar staff held a meeting on Monday night, March 12, to discuss the incident and says they've decided to add two more security staff, are going to train staff to use pepper spray, and may use metal detectors on Friday nights.
Within 60 seconds of that first shooting, according to police reports, officers heard a series of four gunshots before being flagged down by several pedestrians alarmed by "fighting and shooting" at the Shell gas station at the nearby corner of Pike Street and Broadway. The officer reports seeing a group of six or seven black males run north on Broadway before fleeing in separate vehicles. The officer returned to the Shell station to retrieve several bullet casings and "shield the evidence from encroaching inebriates."
Next, a fight broke out at the Shell station between three men and a pizza delivery driver, sending several pizzas scattering across the concrete. The officer at the scene, "scare[d] off" the delivery man's attackers
The SPD, which, thanks to a witness to the first shooting, recovered a handgun in a Dumpster on 12th Avenue, is still investigating.
