I notice there are no monkeys here. Were the original owners eaten by monkeys that have since been removed?

Lisa: [Laughs] They went to Everett. We're still paying them off.

Explain the origin of the name "Monkey Grind" so I can stop wondering if there's anything in the coffee besides beans.

L: The owners told us it was for monkeys in South America.

Karena: We threw out five garbage bags of monkey things.

What's the most interesting thing you've seen someone doing on the cafe's computer?

K: There's a guy we call Eggnog because he even orders it in summer—he's always looking at shoes and AC/DC T-shirts.

Which coffee drink would you make to impress someone for whom "crema" and "cupping" are familiar terminology?

K: I guess just an Americano.

Why did you stop serving beer and wine at night?

L: That was before we owned it. Getting a liquor license is harder than we anticipated. I think they were concerned about our ages.

K: They asked where we kept the money to buy the place—I said, "My mom's."
