Elliott Bay Cafe

(in the basement of Elliott Bay Book Co.)

101 South Main Street, 682-6664

So what do you do here?

I'm a coffee boy mostly. I've worked here for three and a half years. It's a great job—very relaxed.

If books were food, which one would you devour constantly like lamb chops?

Whatever book of the moment I'm reading. It's hard for me to pick a favorite. I get really absorbed in any sensual delight—it's one of the reasons I work here. I'm a sensualist. I like to get my hands in stuff.

Okay, which book would make you vomit like poison?

On the Road by Jack Kerouac. Kerouac is such a shell of a man. He attained fame by mimicking others' experiences and writing about them. It's a terrible book.

What other "sensual delights" do you have on your plate?

I'm a painter. Right now I'm working on a project with the guys from Plan B, as well as some other artists, to put together a laptop orchestra. We're using 10 to 20 musicians for the project, and also filming a documentary about it. And I'm making a 16-by-5-foot painting as a backdrop. It's a huge amount of fun, and something none of us have ever done before. We should have a website up in a few weeks—www.laptoporchestra.com.
