The Turf has a reputation for attracting interesting clientele. What's the strangest thing you've ever seen a customer do?

Last week, somebody tried to get out of paying for his meal by having us call him an ambulance. We still made him pay, though.

You guys have a full bar and an eclectic menu—hamburgers and teriyaki! What's your favorite menu item?

I like the fried rice. We use all kinds of seasonings, and you can order it with everything—beef, pork, chicken, seafood. We do catering, and lots of people order the fried rice for parties.

Do you ever have dreams about working here?

When I first started working here, I had dreams about counting pull tabs all the time.

What has working at the Turf taught you about the city?

Seattle is known for being upper-class, but every city is rough around the edges somewhere. The people at the Turf just crack me up. They look like the meanest people on earth, but it's just their attitude. They say the nicest things.

Do you have a favorite regular?

This guy named George, an old guy in his 80s. He's loud, plays pull tabs all the time. Every day, he's looking for me, even though he can't pronounce my name. He's always talking, and he'll butt into anybody's conversation, especially if it's about sports. recommended
