FRIDAY JANUARY 10

JOSEPH ADAM

Back in the 1800s, the organ was deemed King of the Instruments because of its mass, loudness, and vast palette of sounds. The organ also challenges music writers to forgo formulating lewd puns; the name of this concert series doesn't help either. Anyway, organist Joseph Adam gives a 50-minute recital of organ works by Sweelinck, Bach, Brahms, Boely, and Saint-Saëns. Kilworth Chapel, University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, 253-879-3582, 12:05 pm, free.

JIM KNAPP QUINTET

Usually found fronting a big band, trumpeter Knapp and his quintet showcase Rob Scheps, a saxophonist from New York. With John Hansen on piano, Phil Parisot at the drums, and Phil Sparks--a veteran bassist whose marvelous playing at the recent Ellington Sacred Music concert kicked my ass. Tula's, 2214 Second Ave, 443-4221, 8 pm, $7.

SUNDAY JANUARY 12

MOZART IN THE PARK

Rather than risk the rain, this concert takes place in the snug auditorium of the Seattle Asian Art Museum. Violinists John Kim and Hyekyung Seo, violist Eileen Swanson, and cellist Page Smith tackle two Mozart string quartets, No. 15 in D Minor and No. 18 in A Major. Seattle Asian Art Museum, 1400 E Prospect, Volunteer Park, 343-0445, 2:30 pm, $14.50.

RYAN HARE

A rarity among rarities, Ryan Hare is a bassoonist who performs new music by living composers. Even better, he's eager to augment the bassoon's singular sound with electronic processing and extended techniques. For this concert, Hare performs new works for bassoon solo and bassoon with electronics by Tom Swafford, Eric Flesher, Bret Battey, Michael Chealander, Tom Baker, and Josh Parmenter. Brechemin Auditorium, UW campus, 685-8384, 3 pm, $5/$10.

ELLERY ESKELIN

To those who kvetch that Earshot doesn't book enough avant jazz acts, go to this gig. The trio of tenor saxophonist Ellery Eskelin, accordionist Andrea Parkins, and drummer Jim Black meld free-blowing skronk with the oblique melancholy found in classic straight-ahead jazz. The glue of this group is Parkins, whose sustained tones and triggered samples open up fresh sonic territory. And when these three break into funky cop show jazz--like so many jazzmen do these days--they do it right. Sit & Spin, 2219 Fourth Ave, 547-6763, 9 pm, $10/$12.

WEDNESDAY JANUARY 15

ERIN EARL

This senior at the UW School of Music tickles the ivories with selections from J. S. Bach's French Suite No. 5, and also serves up Beethoven's Sonata for Piano, op. 27, No. 1, Mendelssohn's Fantasy in F-Sharp Minor, op. 28, and Debussy's delightful Estampes. Arrive early as more people are catching on to these fine (and free!) concerts. Sherman-Clay Piano & Organ, 1624 Fourth Ave, 622-7580, 12:15 pm, free.
