THURSDAY APRIL 24

SCORES OF SOUND DAY TWO

Talented classical, jazz, and experimental student players from Cornish survey a range of music from gamelan to bebop to classical chamber music. You can check out "Jazz Ensemble II" at the let's-test-their-skills-while-they're-hung-over time of 11 am. The "Chamber Music" section starts at 2 pm, while "Beginning & Advanced Gamelan" starts at 5 pm. For after-dinner entertainment, "Classical Instrumentalists Section I" at 8 pm and "Vocal Jazz Standards II" sound like good bets. Kerry Hall at Cornish College, 710 E Roy St, 325-6500, 11 am, free.

FRIDAY APRIL 25

SEATTLE BAROQUE

So saith the First Law of Baroque Music: Thou shalt perform Vivaldi's Four Seasons at least once per annum. Along with that perpetual chestnut, violinist Ingrid Matthews & Co. play Francesco Geminiani's Cello Sonata in F Major, Luigi Boccherini's Cello Sonata in B-flat Major, and Domenico Scarlatti's Sonata in D Major, K. 119. Also Thurs April 24 at the Kirkland Performance Center at 7:30 pm, and Sat April 26 at the Recital Hall at Benaroya at 8 pm. University Christian Church, 4731 15th Ave NE, 322-3118, 8 pm, $18-$27.

SATURDAY APRIL 26

MICHAEL WHITE TRIO

Violinist Michael White played with jazz legends Sun Ra, John Coltrane, and Pharoah Sanders and helped pioneer jazz fusion in the early 1970s. White's metaphysically tinged trio features Seattle guitarist Timothy Young and percussionist Dave Brogan. Polestar Music Gallery, 1412 18th Ave at E Union St, 329-4224, 8 pm, $7.

SUNDAY APRIL 27

SEATTLE JAZZ VESPERS

This monthly service combines an hour-and-a-half jazz performance with a brief worship interlude. For me, listening to music and worshipping the divine(s) are one and the same, so coughing up an extra prayer or two shouldn't be too tough. This installment features local jazz legend Clarence Acox and his snazzy sextet. Seattle First Baptist Church, 1111 Harvard Ave, 325-6051, 6 pm, freewill donation.

MUSIC OF REMEMBRANCE

This outfit sponsors performances of music composed by Holocaust victims and survivors. Lest the repertory run out, they also feature post-World War II compositions inspired by the Holocaust; this concert features the world premiere of Lori Laitman's Fathers for baritone and piano trio. Also on the program: Joseph Achron's Stempenyu Suite, Gideon Klein's Fantasy and Fugue for String Quartet (composed at the Terezin camp in 1942), and Erwin Schulhoff's String Sextet. Catch the pre-concert lecture by Sri Lankan poet Anne Ranasinghe and Lori Laitman at 6:45 pm. Recital Hall at Benaroya, Third Ave & Union St, 365-7770, 7:30 pm, $15/$20.

WEDNESDAY APRIL 30

COGNITIVE DISSIDENTS

This double bill features avant guitarist Dennis Rea, who processes assorted un-guitarlike sounds from his lap steel guitar. Electroacoustic sound artist Lyn Goeringer brings "some rusty objects, a few microphones, and some pre-set tape, and electro-acoustic fun." Her works focus on the concept of "The New Loud," which I suspect is louder than "The Old Loud." Coffee Messiah, 1554 E Olive Way, 861-8233, 8 pm, donation requested.
