THURSDAY MAY 22

KINGDOM

Not enough new-music mavens know that Jarrad Powell, head honcho of Gamelan Pacifica, also creates compelling electroacoustic music. Powell collaborates with choreographer Mary Sheldon Scott on Kingdom, part of a cycle of shadow plays that examines humanity's relationship to earth's creatures and the elements of earth, wind, fire, and water. Also Fri-Sat May 23-24. On the Boards Studio Theater, 100 W Roy St, 217-9888, 8 pm, $12/$16.

MONKTAIL CREATIVE MUSIC CONCERN

This collective of wild and woolly free improvisers celebrates 52 straight weeks of free, all-ages, out jazz gigs at one of Seattle's finest and funkiest coffeehouses. Coffee Messiah, 1554 E Olive Way, 861-8233, 8 pm, free.

COMPOSERS' WORKSHOP

Student composers unveil the fruits of their semester-long labor. On the program: two electroacoustic pieces, Wyatt Fletcher's visceral and William Pete Moss' vulgar; Brian Cobb's The Woodmen for two double basses; Joshua Parmenter's Three Poems for low voice, three cellos, and percussion; and Donald Craig's video work Tor Aetherius. Brechemin Auditorium, UW campus, 685-8384, 8 pm, free.

KAMIKAZE 012

As part of Kamikaze Week, a series of disruptive guerrilla music events, eight soloists perform dispersed around the intersection of Broadway and Olive on Capitol Hill. Understandably, the mischievous scamps couldn't tell me much more, so visit home.earthlink.net/~openmusic-workshop/kamikaze.html for the scoop on other sonic sabotage scheduled for downtown, Queen Anne, the U-District, and even Bellevue. Seattle, near the intersection of Broadway and Olive on Capitol Hill, 8:30 pm, free.

PK & WHAT ARMY?

Bassist PK's What Army? of Amy Denio (accordion, vocals, saxophone), Brian Kent (saxophone), and Will Dowd (drums) opens for the Living Daylights, a funky yet hard-squonkin' hard-stompin' jazz power trio led by Jessica Lurie. Tractor Tavern, 5213 Ballard Ave NW, 789-3599, 9 pm, $10.

SUNDAY MAY 25

SEATTLE JAZZ VESPERS

This monthly concert combines an hour-and-a-half jazz performance with a brief worship interlude. The French-flavored light swing of Zazou graces this month's service. Seattle First Baptist Church, 1111 Harvard Ave, 325-6051, 6 pm, freewill donation.

TUESDAY MAY 27

ARTURO SANDOVAL

I must admit I was slow to discover this superb Cuban trumpeter; I stumbled upon his virtuosic stratospherics on The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love soundtrack about a decade ago. A protégé of legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie and veteran of the eclectic Latin jazz ensemble Irakere, Arturo Sandoval hits those impossibly high notes with clarion tone and terrifying precision. His current ensemble includes Robert Rodriguez (piano), Dennis Marks (bass), Samuel Torres (percussion), Felipe Luis LaMoglia (saxophone), and Ernesto Simpson (drums). Also Wed May 28 at 8 pm. Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave, 441-9729, 8 pm, $19.50/$23.50.
