THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 16

SEATTLE SYMPHONY

Schwarz & Co. premiere Paul Schoenfield's Sinfonietta and serve up Aaron Copland's marvelous Suite from Billy the Kid and Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4. I haven't heard the Sinfonietta, but the Copland and Tchaikovsky are worth ducking out of work early on Friday afternoon. Also Fri Sept 17 at 1 pm, Sat Sept 18 at 8 pm, and Sun Sept 19 at 2 pm. Benaroya Hall, Third Ave and Union St, 215-4747, 7:30 pm, $15-$85.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 17

BNSF

This "noise barrage trio" has set up a performance/installation at Nova High School. They say to "expect drums, electronic sounds, films, lights, field recordings, silliness, cartoons..." I wish someone had done that when I was in school; back then "multimedia" meant watching antiquated dating films from the 1960s. Also Sat Sept 18 and Sun Sept 19. Nova High School, 2410 E Cherry St, 252-3500, 6-10 pm, free.

MARK MURPHY WITH NEW STORIES

No, its not the ex-On the Boards honcho returning to regale us with tales of running REDCAT in Los Angeles, but the supremely suave jazz singer and a superb trio led by Seattle keyboardist Marc Seales. The Triple Door, 216 Union St, 838-4333, sets at 7:30 and 10 pm, $16.

NORTHWEST SINFONIETTA

Christophe Chagnard conducts Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D and Beethoven's thunderous Symphony No. 3 in E Flat, the "Eroica." Also Sat Sept 18 at the Rialto Theater in Tacoma. Town Hall, Eighth Ave and Seneca St, 888-356-6040, 8 pm, $10/$34/$38.

BURNT SUGAR

Conceived by Black Rock Coalition cofounder Greg Tate and modeled on Miles Davis' great jazz-rock LP Bitches Brew, this noisy 11-piece collective stirs up a sonic stew of jazz, hiphop, rock, and funky noise. Lo_Fi Performance Gallery, 429 B Eastlake Ave, 254-2824, 10 pm, $10.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 18

NORTHWEST CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

On the program: Vivaldi's Concerto for Violin and Cello in B Flat Major RV 547, Rodion Shchedrin's Carmen Suite for Strings and Percussion, and Krzysztof Penderecki's Concerto for Viola and Orchestra arranged for cello. Also Sun Sept 19 at 2:30 pm. Recital Hall at Benaroya, Third Ave and Union St, 343-0445, 7:30 pm, $25-$35.

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 19

CLARINETISSIMO

Former Met Opera clarinetist Sean Osborn and a coterie of clarinetists play music by Debussy, Poulenc, Messiaen, and Desportes. Kerry Hall at Cornish College, 710 E Roy St, 325-6500, 4 pm, free.

KATAHDIN'S EDGE

Despite a misleading New Age-ish moniker, I liked this jazz trio's CD Step Away (Incline) which sports smart arrangements, Keith Jarrett-influenced piano licks, and sharp, propulsive drumming. If you dig EST and the Bad Plus, this gig is for you. Patti Summers Cabaret, 94 Pike St at First Ave, 621-8555, 8 pm, $10.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 22

SEATTLE WOMEN'S JAZZ ORCHESTRA

Greta Matassa, one of our burg's best jazz singers, teams up with this almost all-women big band to sing standards and sally through new tunes. Tula's, 2214 Second Ave, 443-4221, 7:30 pm, $10.
