THURSDAY 1/20

MARK DE CLIVE-LOWE'S BROKEN BEATS

Britain-based Kiwi producer Mark de Clive-Lowe has been one of the foremost figures in broken beat and nu-jazz (so new it merits a different spelling). With sensuous soul singer Sy Smith, MdCL crafts urban, sophisticated music alluringly poised between the lounge and the dance floor. You will feel at least 34 percent richer just by listening to his sinuous, polyrhythmic productions. Face it—you can use that bonus. Nectar, 8 pm, $8, 21+.

VOLTAGE CONTROL'S MOLTEN BLEEPS

After two visits to Voltage Control, I'm convinced that hosts Ian Scot Price and Patrick Haenelt have hit upon a fantastic concept for a DJ night: the vast, ever-captivating world of electronic music released before 1983, i.e., before techno and house began to dominate the landscape. These guys know their musical history and flaunt exceptionally deep and wide taste in their chosen field. You will hear music by lab-coat-ed experimental/musique-concrète composers, synth-pop fops, industrial hard-asses, kosmische-synth maestros, and more. Living Room, 9 pm, free, 21+.

SATURDAY 1/22

GLASS CANDY AND CHROMATICS

Glass Candy and Chromatics traffic in Euro-trashy disco for drama queens and camp clubbers. With haughty efficiency, they get the deca-dance party started. Which is a neat trick for people from Portland to pull off. Chop Suey, 9 pm, $10 adv/$12 DOS, 21+.

UNITED SOULS' DIALED

Dialed, a new monthly thrown by the house-music mavens in Uniting Souls and happening every fourth Saturday at Baltic Room, debuts tonight. Vancouver's house ambassador Luke McKeehan headlines, kicking off what US promises will be a showcase for "cutting-edge, forward-thinking, underground tech and deep house." Keepers of the flame Jeromy Nail and Ramiro support. Baltic Room, 9 pm, $5 before 10 pm/$10 after, 21+.

MONDAY 1/24

THE COLOUR PROJECT STYLISHLY MOPE

Seattle electro-pop duo the Colour Project earn their British spelling with an overcast style of songwriting bolstered by melancholy female vocals by guitarist/synthesist Jessie McKenna. Mark Chrisman completes the morose outlook with beats, bass, and guitar. Let a descending chord progression be your umbrella. Comet, 9 pm, $6, 21+. recommended
