Date: Tues March 15
Place: El Corazòn, 109 Eastlake Ave
Time: 10 pm

This grotto-like Eastlake Avenue venue has changed hands and names so many times, I may start referring to it as the Off Ramp (its early '90s moniker) just to simplify things in my head. Its most recent rechristening as "El Corazòn" is the result of a joint purchase by Infinite Productions owner Lori LeFavor and Graceland booking agent Dana Sims, an acquisition that means the crowd who already gravitates toward Infinite's typical calendar of So-Cal skate punk and progressive nu-metal now has a venue tailored almost entirely to their tastes. The title of tonight's event is "RRROOOAAARRR: An Evening of Punk, Hardcore, and Metal," a free DJ night fueled by $1.50 PBRs, $3 well whiskeys, and $3 Sparks that has attracted a predictable crowd of ornery, tattooed, rocker-goth types with a tendency to scream and shriek their conversations over the Throbbing Gristle soundtrack. Nearly everyone is chain-smoking with great enthusiasm and there's a notable preponderance of burgundy-streaked hair among the female patrons, one of whom is absent-mindedly firing spitballs at hapless folks headed for the bar. Dejha from the Rotten Apples--looking like her usual foxy self in a tight Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! shirt--manages to duck through the room without getting hit by anyone's saliva. A sludgy metal song comes on with lyrics that sound like a repeated endorsement to "rape the dead," a suggestion evidently pleasing to a girl wearing braids and a slashed-up Clash T-shirt who is jumping up and down on the colbalt-blue floor and chattering excitedly into her cell phone. A stunned-looking blond fellow fingering the tan fedora on his head grins as he watches our jumping-braid-girl skid toward the bar for a fresh cocktail. Really, who needs Sparks when there's this much inherent hyperactivity in the room already? HANNAH LEVIN
