THURSDAY 6/8

URBAN PERMACULTURE SLIDE SHOW--Jude Hobbs, a Eugene native, will present this slide show to illuminate her concept of urban permaculture, a conservative strategy of landscape design based on soil building, plant/landscape compatibility, and water harvesting. If the prospect of another year of mere composting bores you to tears, then this event is for you. Phinney Neighborhood Center, 6532 Phinney Ave N, 441-5352 ext. 5714, 6:30 pm, free.

SATURDAY 6/10

PAGDIRIWANG--The Festal series sponsored by the Seattle Center is an ongoing group of events that celebrate the ethnic diversity of the emerald city, and Pagdiriwang (translated as ultimate celebration) is devoted to the traditional music, food, and cultural ephemera of the Philippines. Filipino culture, like that of many countries in our post-colonial world, is a blend of regional influences (in this case Southeast Asian), indigenous tradition, and the influence of colonizers (first Spain, then America). The Philippines have been an independent nation since the end of World War II. The festival continues through Sunday and is expected to draw about 10,000 visitors. Seattle Center, 10 am-9 pm, Sun 10 am-6 pm, free.

SUNDAY 6/11

FREEDOM SOCIALIST PARTY--Fidgety revolutionaries, perennial anti-government types, and anti-war activists are invited to this ongoing forum that discusses American foreign policy in current global hot spots. This week's topic is the Clinton administration's escalating military buildup in Colombia, which in all likelihood is a heavy-handed attempt to persuade our South American neighbors to change cash crops. Future topics will explore U.S. stances toward China, Zimbabwe, and Iran. New Freeway Hall, 5018 Rainier Ave S, 722-2453, 1-3 pm, free.

SACRED SEX WORKSHOP--The Seattle Institute for Sex Therapy, Education, and Research concludes a six-month workshop cycle with an exploration of ancient erotic practices and their relevance to the modern, sexually active couple. Explicit media will be used to clarify specific concepts and practices. SISTER, 100 NE 56th St, 522-8588 to pre-register, 7:30 pm.
