DIVERSIONS

by Mark Pinkos

THURSDAY 6/15

RADICAL WOMEN--Ruth Ellis, the world's oldest "out" African American lesbian, is the subject of a new documentary entitled Living with Pride: Ruth Ellis at 100. This should be a unique opportunity to experience a life, and by extension the 20th century, through an "other," historically alternative lens. 5018 Rainier Ave S, 722-6057, 7:30 pm. Dinner at 6:30 pm with $6.50 donation.

FRIDAY 6/16

PAULA DORF--Good style never goes out of style, as they say, and this seems to be New York-based celebrity makeup artist Paula Dorf's credo. She'll be at Nordstrom to espouse her cosmetic philosophy, to provide one-on-one consultations, and of course to promote her eponymous line of makeup. If you're tired of the trendy, "here today, gone tomorrow" fashion aesthetic, then belly up to the cosmetic bar and let Mrs. Dorf "classicize" you. Nordstrom, Downtown Seattle, Fri-Sat 11 am-5 pm, free.

LIVE TV AUCTIONS--Tired of getting burned on eBay? A journey through the statical, white-noise jungle of UHF channels will lead you to KHCV-TV 45, where they host a nationwide, live TV auction. You can bet on abundant bargains at this "wild and wacky" shopping bonanza! KHCV-TV 45, 5-7 pm.

SATURDAY 6/17

SUMMER MICROBREW FESTIVAL--Before there were dot-coms, the surefire way to get rich quick in the Northwest was to brew your own beer. In the 15 years or so since the first quaff of the microbrew revolution, local brewmeisters have refined and possibly perfected their craft. Enjoy the libations of their labor-intensive research at this two-day festival that conveniently falls on the same weekend as Father's Day (this year, show your love with a pint, not a tie). To sweeten the pot, they've scheduled live bands and a root beer garden for the underage, as well. St. Edward State Park, 14445 Juanita Dr SE, Kenmore, Sat-Sun 11 am-8 pm, $12-$15.

SUNDAY 6/18

EMERALD DOWNS FAMILY DAY--What better place to celebrate the unique bond that exists only between family members than at the track? Family spirits should be especially ebullient since today is also Father's Day. Kids can stay amused with pony rides, clowns, airbrush face painting (?), and a parrot & pirate interactive exhibit (arrrgh, matey), while Pops tries just one more time to hit the exacta. Emerald Downs, 2300 Emerald Downs Dr, Auburn, 888-931-8400, 11:30 am, $3 general.
