SALMON HOMECOMING--If you haven't had your fill of celebrations and festivals this summer--and really, who has?--here's your chance to fit in one more before fall comes around. The Northwest Coasting Gathering will entertain and educate you with traditional dance, theater, and ceremonial presentations performed for you by local tribes. BAKERS FESTIVAL--Think you can bake bread that will turn Martha Stewart green with envy? Then get your loaves on down to the Tilth Organic Harvest Fair for the Amateur Home Bread-Bakers Contest! All entries are accepted on-site beginning at 10 am, and judging will start promptly at 11 am. There will be a variety of categories to choose from, including savory, sweet, rye, and basic, for you plain folks. After winning the blue ribbon, stick around to see how the pros do it (as if you need advice!) at demonstrations held throughout the day. SUNDAY 9/10

STUDIO SUMMIT--Well, the CMJ festival certainly didn't "change music," so the first annual Studio Summit is going to give it a shot. Producer Steve Albini (you know, the guy who worked with bands like the Pixies, Nirvana, and the Breeders) will be present as the keynote speaker, and local names like Paul Speer, Terry Date, and Larry Crane will also be present for the discussion. The night will range in subject matter from attracting more major-label business to new technologies. Space is limited. WEDNESDAY 9/13

GMO TEACH-IN--I think eating fish is gross, but even more so is knowing that in the near future we could be eating genetically modified fish! Yes, that's right, the U.S. government is set to grant a permit for genetically engineered salmon. To educate consumers about the potential impacts to the environment and people's health, Greenpeace is going to be holding a teach-in as part of their Genetic Engineering Campaign.
