Will someone please open up a great restaurant made to last at 806 Roy Street? It is such a singularly wonderful space; it breaks my heart that the last two businesses to occupy were both gone in the blink of an eye.

After barely three months, Coco La Ti Da abruptly closed last week when pastry chef Sue McCown quit, leaving her employees shocked and shit out of luck. I guess this answers the question of whether or not a (ludicrously named) dessert lounge could thrive as a viable business. I hate to speak ill of the dead, especially since I never felt compelled enough to actually eat at Coco La Ti Da, but the eatery's passing got me thinking about the desserts I actually crave and that I hope never go away.

My favorite place for sweets is the appropriately named Cake House My Favorite (620 S Weller St, 223-2766) in the International District. I love Chinese bakeries like Cake House—all their items are delicate, never cloying, and they never send me into sugar-induced cardiac arrest. I could easily eat an entire coffee roll ($8)—light, spongy, wet cake rolled around a subtle cream cheese-y white filling—and feel better about myself after. I also live for the strawberry shortcake at the Kingfish Cafe (602 19th Ave, 320-8757)—the shortbread is perfectly dense and a bit salty—and one serving is approximately the size of a human head. (Look for the seasonal strawberry shortcake to show up on the Kingfish menu again this spring.)
