Enough

Now playing at various theaters.

"You have the divine right to defend your life and that of your offspring" is the legal argument for determining self-defense from murder. But in Enough, it's the legal basis for getting away with murder. And because women have been killed by abusive mates since time began, we are supposed to cheer wildly when mistreated wife Slim (Jennifer Lopez) plans and carries out the execution of her fuckhead, psychopathic husband. And people do.

In one of the most implausible, falsely empowering films ever committed to wide release, Enough is an unwitting comedy rife with clichés (the feisty waitress rescued from drudgery by a filthy-rich WASP) and stupid plot contrivances--the most egregious being Slim's penitent deadbeat father (Fred Ward), now rolling in money and dolling it out hand over fist to his heretofore forgotten daughter, bankrolling Slim's four-week transformation from housewife to a surveillance-equipment- savvy, ruthless killer. (Also, a child is involved; she's knocked unconscious, shuttled from person to person, and her mental well-being is ignored with sickening disregard.)

Billy (The Rocketeer) Campbell's Mitch is a creepy slimeball of a husband, for sure. Just because his wife stands up to him about his philandering ways (another cliché--his mistress is French) is no reason she should have to endure a beating and spend a good part of the film hiding her split cheek behind very expensive-looking sunglasses. Slim has little reason to believe the legal system will give her sanctuary, so she flees town, is duly tracked down, and becomes convinced Mitch's money will get him sole custody of their child.

She's right, but murdering him is a premature resolution. Premeditated murder wipes out any chance of claiming self-defense, even if it's carefully set out to look that way.

Oh, and JESUS GOD--the final scene is so retarded and corny that folks will be looking under their seats for their eyeballs, as well as their keys.
