How happy is Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days? So happy that its lead, a frivolous woman buried up to her waist in a giant anthill, justifies her situation like this: “Never any change, and more and more strange… What a curse, mobility.” Mary Ewald plays Winnie as a prattling, mindless wife who thoughtlessly puts on her hat, takes off her hat, opens her umbrella, fondles the pistol in her purse, etc. Seanjohn Walsh plays Willy, her henpecked and mostly silent husband. Together, they ace Beckett’s blithely banal horror show, and his fondness for dirty schoolboy puns. (New City Theater, 1404 18th Ave, www.newcitytheater.org, 8 pm, $20)
