Conflicts over art have been recorded going back at least to the eighth century. The 21st has had several already, including the Catholic League dustup over a video involving ants crawling over a crucifix by David Wojnarowicz in the exhibition Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture—the first major museum exhibition designed to reveal the gayness embedded in the canon of American art. Walk through the show (which is much subtler than its critics’ protest), then check out part one of a lecture series on art controversies through history.
