Bike Veto

Bike parking, which has been in short supply since Seattle crews began yanking metal parking meters and replacing them with fat plastic pay stations several months ago, is about to get a boost in the form of "circle bike racks"--metal loops that can be bolted to existing parking meter posts. City Council member Tom Rasmussen, who generally supports the idea of retrofitting the decommissioned meters, nonetheless noted one problem with the plan: It allows property owners to object to the installation of a rack, essentially giving private tenants veto power over the use of public property. Tenants, transportation department head Grace Crunican noted in an e-mail, will also be able to have racks removed at the city's expense. ERICA C. BARNETT

City vs. County

On Monday, January 10, the Seattle City Council got busy. They endorsed the tunnel plan and laid out design and financing guidelines for the Alaskan Way Viaduct, and passed a resolution calling for more arts funding from local hotel taxes.

So what was up across the street at the King County Council? Important stuff, to be sure. The council congratulated Seattle University's men's soccer team for winning its division, proclaimed January Martin Luther King Jr. Month, and passed a bill allowing county employees to turn vacation time into tsunami relief donations. Whew! Tough day!

Legislative bodies typically hibernate during the holidays, but it's mid-January already. No wonder county residents voted to downsize the council. NANCY DREW

Resend to Senn

Poor Deborah Senn. She's had it rough, first losing the AG's race to Republican Rob McKenna, then losing all those "gratifying" e-mail messages from commiserating supporters that "lifted my spirits."

In a group e-mail sent out December 30, Senn explains: "I checked my e-mail remotely when I was in Hawaii and the Comcast server for some reason deleted them. So, I am unable to answer. If any of you still have your lovely e-mails in your sent file could you please resend them to me…" Consider this our response, Deborah. We love you. You're the best. SANDEEP KAUSHIK
