CLASSICAL

SATURDAY 8/28

OLYMPIC MUSIC FESTIVAL -- Pianist Paul Hersh in an all-Beethoven afternoon. Sonatas Op. 27 no. 2 in C Sharp, Op. 57 in F, Op. 31 no. 2 in D, and Op. 81a in E Flat -- or, if you prefer, "Moonlight," "Appassionata," "Tempest," and "Les Adieux." Both concerts are preceded at 1 pm by an informal lecture with musical examples. Olympic Festival Barn, which is southwest of Port Townsend and northeast of Quilcene, but you'd better call for accurate directions, Sat & Sun Aug 28 & 29, 2 pm, $10 for the lawn/$15/$18/$20, 527-8839.

CASCADE FESTIVAL OF MUSIC -- You can scratch that travel itch metaphorically with a trip down south to Bend, OR, home of this festival. As if that's not enough of a journey, each concert is built around a separate country: Saturday offers a Spanish flair, with exactly what you'd expect: Albeniz's Suite Espanola and Iberia, de Falla's Three Cornered Hat and El Amor Brujo, Rodrigo, and some flamencos; Sunday offers the music of Africa -- nothing more specific -- courtesy of the West African Highlife Band. Monday is France's turn with Debussy's Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune, Ravel's Concerto in G for Piano, and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. Then Tuesday it's Mother Russia: Liadov's Two Russian Folk Songs, Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherezade, and Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. Drake Park Pavilion, Bend, OR, Sat-Tues Aug 28-31, 7:30 pm, $3-$25, 541-382-8381.
