THURSDAY 10/7

SEATTLE SYMPHONY -- If you doubt that classical music is in a rut, consider that the most controversial composer of late is Serge Prokofiev, whom a lot of high profile critics have derided for supposed lack of substance. Hey, we can't all be Shostakovich. But judge for yourself, with his energetic Sinfonia Concertante (Natalia Gutman on cello), along with Revueltas' brief, sinuous, and explosive Sensemayá and Sibelius' Symphony No. 2. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, Thurs Oct 7, 7:30 pm and Sat Oct 9, 8 pm, $10-$67. 215-4747 or www.seattlesymphony.org.

SATURDAY 10/9

NORTHWEST CHAMBER ORCHESTRA -- Concerts of classical music (in its historical sense) are inevitably programmed so they can all safely be titled "Some Mozart, Some Haydn, and One Other Guy." Here we get Mozart's Overture to Bastien et Bastienne, and Symphony No. 40 in G. The latter, like the Haydn selection, Symphony No. 78 in C, is both a perfect picture of 18th-century grace and balance, and a rumbling precursor to the 19th century just ahead. Odd man in this time is Witt's Symphony in A. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, Sat Oct 9, 8 pm, and Sun Oct 10, 2:30 pm, $22.50 students and seniors/$24.50 general, 343-0445.

BICINIA -- Iberia did a lot more for music than just inspire Albéniz; this concert by David Douglass and Margriet Tindemans covers the region during the Medieval, Renaissance, and early Baroque periods. Central Lutheran Church, 1710 11th, Sat Oct 9, 8 pm, and Frye Art Museum, 704 Terry, Sun Oct 10, 2 pm, 726-6088, $9-$18.
