FRIDAY 10/22

THE CLASSICAL CONSORT -- What composers do you use to usher in a newly built replica of an 1816 fortepiano? That's right, though exactly what pieces by Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Robert and Clara Schumann will be performed, I couldn't tell you. Queen Anne Baptist Church, 2011 First Ave N, 726-6088, also Sat Oct 23, 8 pm, $9 students/$15 seniors/$18 general.

SEATTLE SYMPHONY -- This year's "Music of our Time" series kicks off with Ligeti's marvelously spooky "micro-polyphonic" Ramifications; Bryars' touching, hypnotic Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet (sans Tom Waits, though he'll be in town earlier in the week); the Prelude from Copland's Symphony No. 1, which got him hailed as the "Stravinsky from Brooklyn"; Boucourechliev's Boulezian homage to Beethoven, Ombres; and two where your guess is as good as mine: Rainier's Sinfonia da Camera and Kubik's Folk Song Suite. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 215-4747 or www.seattlesymphony.org, 8 pm, $15.

SATURDAY 10/23

NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA -- National treasure Leonard Slatkin conducts his visiting organization in a program as toe-tappingly Americana as it gets: Barber, Bolcom, Gershwin's American in Paris, and Copland's Third. If they'd thrown in Roy Harris they could have programmed this for July 4th. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 215-4747 or www.seattlesymphony.org, 7:30 pm, $15-$67.

TUESDAY 10/26

EMERSON STRING QUARTET -- Last season's performance of Quartet No. 3 turns out only to have been the start of a Shostakovich cycle. This evening brings two of his sublime late masterworks, both dedicated to elderly members of the Beethoven Quartet: the grave, expressive, single-movement No. 13, and the affectionate, humane No. 14. Keeping the twilight genius theme going, the concert ends with Beethoven's Op. 132. Meany Theater, University of Washington, 543-4880, 8 pm, $27.
