CLASSICAL

FRIDAY 1/28

SEATTLE SYMPHONY -- It doesn't come any more "greatest hits package" than this. Handel's "Entrance of the Queen of Sheba" from Solomon, Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, Pachelbel's Canon, and Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Plus Haydn's Symphony No. 44, "Trauer," which, unlike the other pieces, you actually can't hear enough to get sick of it. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, Fri-Sat Jan 28-29, 8 pm, 215-4747 or www.seattlesymphony.org, $15-$47.

SATURDAY 1/29

ELIOT FISK -- One of the finest contemporary guitarists, in a program that's... well, a complete mystery. But if you're a fan of the instrument, no doubt you're used to wildly eclectic musical juxtapositions by now. Benaroya Hall, Nostrum Recital Hall, 7:30 pm, 297-8788, $18 students & seniors/$23 general.

LAKE UNION CIVIC ORCHESTRA -- This concert is entitled American Composers Celebrating the Spirit of the West; and while I wouldn't expect musicians to be geographical experts, I would like to think they knew which coast Copland was saluting in Appalachian Spring (why not Rodeo?). Also, Thomson's elegant take on Americana, The Plow That Broke the Plains, and the world premiere of Sheila Espinoza's Way Out West. Town Hall, Eighth and Seneca, 7:30 pm, $5 at door/children under 12 free.

WEDNESDAY 2/2

URSULA OPPENS -- Oppens has been on a Beethoven jag of late -- last time she came to town we were treated to his Second Piano Concerto. This time out it's the Sonatas: the light Op. 14, No. 2 and the calm Op. 28 ("Pastoral"), then the multifaceted "Funeral March," Op. 26, and the expressive Op. 53, "Waldstein," both of which are the real deal. In an inspired choice, smack dab in the middle comes Adams' minimalist classic Phrygian Gates, whose sweeping gestures point clearly to the fullbore romantic he's come to be. Meany Theater, University of Washington, 8 pm, 543-4880, $27.

RADIO SHOWS

STATION OF THE WEEK: C89 -- Sometimes you just need a bolt of cheese whiz pop to do you right, and this is the undisputed spot on the dial to get it. Run by Nathan Hale High School, the station has NO COMMERCIALS and will give you the exact same music every time. True, you can't stay on the station for more than 10 minutes, but oh, that time is a panacea. 89.5 keeps it real on your FM dial.

Saturday 1/29

THE LIVE ROOM -- Local lovelies Bugs in Amber will perform on KCMU's live music slot. Their slammin' lyrics and jammin' instrumentation are Seattle's contribution to the synthesis of all musical beauty: rap/rock. Just kidding. Their melodic tone and engaging songwriting contribute to the integrity of good music, and they're bound to put on a good show. KCMU 90.3 FM, 8-9 pm.

Sunday 1/30

COMPLINE MASS -- It's either brilliantly progressive piety or just plain silliness that St. Mark's choral Compline Mass is attended by stoned teens lying around the aisles as much as traditional churchgoers. But if you don't want to deal with the teeny scenesters, turn to KING 98.1 FM from 9:30-10 am.

Monday 1/31

RADIO MYSTERY THEATER -- Whole personalities are created by the inflection and tone of a voice, and narratives have to be compact and steadily accelerated in a way not found in print, cinema, or on the boob tube. The themes and effects are always fantastical and often deserve the big eye-roll, but the phenomenology of listenership is wonderful: It's passive in that you only have to pay attention, but active in that the imagination is provoked to create visuals on the wall you are staring at. Kisses to KUOW 94.9 FM for starting up this series, which will appear Mon-Fri at 10 pm.

METROPOLITAN OPERA -- George Shangrow will host a live show featuring the top three winners of a Metropolitan Opera contest. The illustrious George and KING FM state on their website that Seattle "is an OPERA CITY" and that they want to be the primary conduit for the esoteric genre. Word up. KING 98.1 FM, 8 pm.

Tuesday 2/1

MEDIABUREAU.COM -- I'm not sure that broadcasts requiring computers should go into the radio calendar, but what the hell: www.Mediabureau.com puts Philly's perpetually under-appreciated music on the map. From 2-7 pm every Tuesday, DJs cover reggae, funk, soul, house, and hiphop.
