CLASSICAL

by Bruce Reid

THURSDAY 2/10

SEATTLE SYMPHONY -- I'm no huge fan of Rachmaninov's romanticism or Martin's audience-pleasing snappiness. If you disagree, feel free to enjoy Jon Kimura Parker soloing in Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini or Martinu's calmest symphony, No. 4. I do like Dvorák's The Wood Dove, however. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, Thurs Feb 10, 7:30 pm, Fri Feb 11, 1 pm, Sat Feb 12, 8 pm, and Sun Feb 13, 2 pm, 215-4747 or www.seattlesymphony.org, $10-$67.

FRIDAY 2/11

SEATTLE CHAMBER PLAYERS -- Flutist Robert Aitken performs his own compositions Plainsong and My Song. I've never heard them, but the titles certainly sound melodic; he also conducts two Stravinsky works, the brilliant Octet and the lesser but still unmistakable Concertino for 12 Instruments. Plus Kodály's Duo for Violin and Cello. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 8 pm, 367-1138, $15 students & seniors/$20 general.

SATURDAY 2/12

INGRID MATTHEWS AND BYRON SCHENKMAN -- First, the duo performs Bach sonatas for violin and harpsichord. Then, the two soloists each perform a masterpiece: the Italian Concerto, and perhaps the greatest 15 minutes written for solo violin, the majestic Chaconne from Partita No. 2 in D. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 8 pm, 322-3118, $14 students/$18 seniors/$23 general.

WEDNESDAY 2/16

AHN TRIO -- A nice program -- Bernstein's early Piano Trio, Dvorák's Trio in F, Op. 65, and Schoenfield's Four Music Videos, written for the ensemble -- whose appeal is diminished by my indifference for the performers. Meany Theater, University of Washington, 8 pm, 543-4880 or 292-ARTS, $27.
