CLASSICAL

by Bruce Reid

THURSDAY 3/9

COREY AND KATJA CEROVSEK -- The increasingly popular brother and sister team (he fiddles, she tickles ivory) returns to town with Sonatas from a young Beethoven (Spring, Op. 24), a middle-aged Poulenc, and an old Janácek -- though the last is probably the freshest and most youthful of the bunch. There's also flowery showstoppers from Kreisler and Wieniawski. Meany Theater, University of Washington, 8 pm, 543-4880 or 292-ARTS, $27.

FRIDAY 3/10

URI CAINE -- I haven't yet heard jazz pianist Caine's de-/reconstructions of Mahler and Wagner themes, but they've made for lively reading in the critical press, either chuckling admiringly at Caine's wit or denouncing him as a moronic fraud. Here's a chance to decide for yourself, with Seattle Chamber Players aiding in the irreverence. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 8 pm, 367-1138, $15 students & seniors/$20 general.

SUNDAY 3/12

NORTHWEST CHAMBER ORCHESTRA -- The lyrical beauty of Mendelssohn makes a nice choice for this Music in the Park entry: the Sonata in C for Viola and Piano, and the Piano Trio in D, Op. 49. Seattle Asian Art Museum, Volunteer Park, 2:30 pm, 343-0445, $12.50.

TUESDAY 3/14

MICHAEL SHANNON -- A lecture by the composer, along with recorded excerpts of his recent work, Vocal Overtones, consisting of voice and "unusual and invented instruments" captured in unique sonic locations. Jack Straw Productions, 4261 Roosevelt Way NE, 7:30 pm, 634-0919, free.

DUBRAVKA TOMSIC -- Though not a household name, pianist Tomsic's press packet declares her a legend in Eastern Europe. Apparently she's trying to spread the word, with a concert filled with the kind of fiery, difficult pieces that leads to ecstatic word of mouth: Bach/Busoni's Prelude and Fugue in D, BWV 532, Liszt's Sonata, and Prokofiev's Sonata No. 4 in C, Op. 29. Meany Theater, University of Washington, 8 pm, 543-4880, $27.

RADIO SHOWS

by Mark Pinkos

THURSDAY 3/9

JAZZSET -- Branford Marsalis is your guide to the world of "progressive" (by your parents' standards) jazz on this program. This week features noted "out-there" musicians Dave Brubeck (a case could be made for his championing of convoluted time signatures) and Al (prog) Jarreau. Fans of real progressive jazz are encouraged to dust off their "Giant Steps" record instead. KBCS 91.3, 7 pm.

SATURDAY 3/11

LIVE ROOM -- Start your live radio journey with Wolf Colonel, yet another ambassador of sticky-sweet pop that occasionally packs a punch. Fans of the genre are encouraged to tune in. KCMU 90.3, 8-9 pm.

SONARCHY -- This is Seattle's most consistently variegated broadcast forum for the region's musicians. This week, Sonarchy will host Mabuse, a duo that represents Seattle's burgeoning mad-scientist music scene. Fans of avant-space-drone-ambient-free jazz are encouraged to tune in. KCMU 90.3, 11 pm-midnight.

SUNDAY 3/12

SOUNDPRINT -- This week's topic is life support. A woman whose father suddenly falls into a coma struggles with thorny philosophical issues. Is being kept alive the same as living? Who should decide when to pull the plug? When is the appropriate time to shift the dial over to 96.5 "The Point"? Seattle now has its own '80s station, 24-7!! Those Bryan Adams, Corey Hart, and Romantics cravings can now be sated without having to dig through the used vinyl bins. Oh yeah, Soundprint is on KUOW 94.9 at 6 pm.

WEDNESDAY 3/15

STREET PRANKS AND PUT-ONS -- Two jokers in the early 1960s take to the streets with their tape recorders to question innocent folks about "absurd predictions." You guessed it, hilarity ensues. Fans of improv comedy and Candid Camera-style hijinks are encouraged to tune in. KUOW 94.9, 9:30 pm.
