FRIDAY 7/7

GREENWOOD SUMMER BAND--The fourth season of free concerts by this wind band. Those who enjoy playing that Kevin Bacon game might find it interesting that band director William Blayney's father was the star pupil of Fred Weaver, clarinetist for the Bandleader to end all Bandleaders, John Philip Sousa himself. Hiram Chittenden Locks, 7 pm, free.

SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL--One of the fastest-selling tickets in town (it may already be too late), but the early recital remains first-come first-served, and you can always listen for free out on the lawn. This evening's recital features pianist Edmund Battersby (a nice Dickensian name) in unspecified works by Mendelssohn, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. The concert itself features Mozart's famous Trio in E flat, then two austerely Romantic pieces: K. 563, R. Strauss' Sonata for Cello and Piano in F, Op. 6; and the Piano Quartet in E, Op. 20 by Taneyev. Lakeside School, 14050 First Ave NE, 292-ARTS, 7 and 8 pm, $15 students/$25-$32 general, free outdoor seating.

SEATTLE SYMPHONY--The ongoing breaking-in of Benaroya's new concert organ continues with some perfectly fine American pieces (Piston's Prelude and Allegro, Copland's Symphony for Organ and Orchestra) and a simply perfect French one (Poulenc's Organ Concerto in G). Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 215-4747 or seattlesymphony.org, 8 pm, $10-$62.

MONDAY 7/10

SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL--The recital this evening has the gem, with von Dohnányi's Serenade for String Trio in C, Op. 10. Not that the concert itself--Mozart's Trio in B flat, K. 502, Nielsen's fine Sonata for Violin and Piano Op. 35, and Brahms' Sextet for Strings in G, Op. 36--is anything to sneeze at. Lakeside School, 14050 First Ave NE, 292-ARTS, 7 and 8 pm, $15 students/$25-$32 general, free outdoor seating.

WEDNESDAY 7/12

SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL--The early recital features Adam Neiman in Beethoven's Piano Sonata in A flat, Op. 110 and Grieg's early Sonata in E, Op. 7. Then Saint-Saën's transcription for Violin, Cello and Piano of Liszt's Orpheus; Schulhoff's dark and exciting String Quartet No. 1; and Schumann's Trio in F, Op. 80. Lakeside School, 14050 First Ave NE, 292-ARTS, 7 and 8 pm, $15 students/$25-$32 general, free outdoor seating.

SEATTLE SYMPHONY CHORALE--This summer's sing-along series kicks off with the works of American composers. Unspecified works for chorus by Copland (deceptively simple, so you'll think you're singing in tune), Gershwin (deceptively pop-oriented, so it won't matter if you're in tune so long as you have the rhythm down), and Ives (deceptively chaotic, so no one will know whether you're in tune or not). St. Mark's Cathedral, 1245 10th Ave E, 215-4734, 7 pm, $8 (five-concert series ticket, $30).

RADIO SHOWS
by Megan Seling

SATURDAY 7/8

SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED--AC/DC said it best: "For those about to rock, we salute you!" This week, Shaken pays tribute to almighty heavy metal. Don the old Black Sabbath T-shirt--we know you still have it--and tune in to see if they'll highlight the songs you deem worthy. If you want blood, you got it. KQBZ 100.7 FM, 9 pm.

SONARCHY RADIO--Now that you've gotten that crazy heavy metal phase out of your system, switch gears--and stations--and calm down with some spoken word and "downtempo electronics." Tonight's show, "No Futuro," also includes music featuring Roderick Romero of Sky Cries Mary. The Sabbath T-shirt should now go back in the closet. KCMU 90.3 FM, 11 pm.

SUNDAY 7/9

WHAT'S THE WORD--Talk radio has always been able to put me to sleep, but hopefully your attention span is longer than 10 minutes. The question posed today is this: "How has literature reflected and shaped our ideas of the American self?" Guests including Michael Warner, Nina Baym (U of Illinois), and David Leverenz (U of Florida) will discuss topics such as how the Puritans invented themselves, the importance of gender, and images of Americans in 19th-century literature. KUOW 94.9 FM, 2:30 pm.

MONDAY 7/10

SEATTLE SOLO--Performance for Microphone and Audience. Tonight kicks off the three-night series featuring local theatrical and literary performers perfecting some of their new work live from KUOW's studio, and incudes Matt Smith, Heidi Schreck, and Keri Healy. KUOW 94.9 FM, 9:30 pm.

WEDNESDAY 7/12

THE SPLENDID TABLE--Now that you've once again broken out the old grill that spends 10 months of the year rusting in the backyard, you'll need ideas on what to do with it. Steven Raichlen, author of The Barbecue Bible, will give you just that. Don't expect the basic how-to on grilling a burger, though--Steve will take you on a grilling field trip, covering recipes from Korea, South Africa, Japan, and more. KUOW 94.9 FM, 7 pm.
