FRIDAY 11/3

JOHN MURPHY--A concert that systematically yokes rags by the breezy, bouncy William Bolcolm with preludes by the roiling, romantic Rachmaninoff? At first blush the idea just seems perverse, but Murphy might be on to something here. Certainly both composers had an ear for melody spread across wide chromatic ranges, and a good showman's appreciation for flashy effect. Such Bolcolm tunes as "Raggin Rudy," "Epithalamium," and "Lost Rag" contrasted with selections from Rachmaninoff's Op. 32. If Murphy has the digits to pull off the performances, it could be interesting. Brechemin Auditorium, UW School of Music, Room 126, 685-8384, 8 pm, $10 general, $8 students/seniors.

SATURDAY 11/4

NEW MUSIC SEATTLE--A sort of one-stop-shopping superconcert for local contemporary music groups, this evening will present four ensembles who've all done fine and good work for the music of today. Taneko will show off the intelligent interplay that is this trio's hallmark; the Degenerate Art Ensemble's jazzy cabaret music will provide a theatrical element; the Contemporary Chamber Composers Players have a wealth of their own compositional talent to draw upon; and Eraz Ensemble are presenting a work of Stephen Bayne's inspired by 12th-century Andalusian poets. Moore Theatre, 1932 Second Ave, 292-ARTS or www.themoore.com, 8 pm, $15-$25.

SUNDAY 11/5

FREDERIC RZEWSKI--Why list a concert in Bellingham? Because Rzewski is the greatest pianist-composer going today, his thundering skill at the keyboard matched only by the sophistication and tangled intricacy of the lovely music he writes. His chops will be no more on display in Beethoven's Appassionata than in his own Turtle and the Crane and Mayn Yingele, plus other unspecified works. He will be in Seattle later this month, but if you want to hear him for free, trust me, he's worth the drive. (Also note that Tues Nov 7 at 8 pm, students and faculty of WWU will perform an evening of Rzewski compositions; but if you only make one show, go for the real deal.) Performing Arts Center Concert Hall, Western Washington University, Bellingham, 360-650-3130, 3 pm, free.

JANET SEE, CLAIRE GARABEDIAN, & TAMARA FRIEDMAN--Not the most flowing headnote, but the trio (flute, cello, fortepiano, respectively) doesn't have an identity, per se. Merely three fine local musicians getting together for a rousing, enjoyable program of classical chamber pieces: Beethoven's Serenade for Flute and Fortepiano, Op. 41; Mozart's dancing Rondo in a, K. 511; and two of Haydn's infinitely witty and sparkling Trios, Hob. XV: 17 in F and Hob. XV: 16 in D. Seattle Asian Art Museum, Volunteer Park, 726-6088, 2 pm, $20 general, $10 students, $16 seniors, children 14 and under free when accompanied by an adult.
