THURSDAY 11/9

MUSICIANS ACCORD--New chamber works from Brazil by Miriam Gideon, Egberto Gismonti, Jovino Santos Neto, and Amy Rubin. Plus hors d'oeuvres! Town Hall, Eighth and Seneca, 283-8710 or tracy@scmf.org, 8 pm (7:30 for the snacks), $8 (free to Under Forte members).

SEATTLE SYMPHONY--Berlioz's thundering Roman Carnival overture and Ravel's flowing La Valse bookend the evening, giving you a nice overview of the extremes of French composition. Also Mozart's charmingly bouncy Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major, and Jones' Symphony No. 3, Palo Duro Canyon. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 215-4747 or www.seattlesymphony.org, 7:30 pm, $10-$69. Also Fri Nov 10, 1 pm, and Sun Nov 12, 2 pm.

FRIDAY 11/10

*FREDERIC RZEWSKI--The greatest pianist/composer since Chopin--period. End of story. If you doubt that, come to this concert and hear his sure-to-be stunning rendition of Four North American Ballads, an epic, driving, ultimately horrifying set of variations of folk and labor movement tunes. Andante Con Moto is another collection of variations, this time around the so-named movement from Beethoven's Appassionata. The Seattle Chamber Players, Rzewski's hosts for the evening, get in on the act with the semi-improvisational Spots. There is no excuse to miss this concert. Not one. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 286-5052, 8 pm (pre-concert lecture by Rzewski at 7:30 pm), $20 general, $15 students/seniors.

SATURDAY 11/11

BACH AROUND THE CLOCK--Drown yourself in the lively, buzzing loveliness of Johann Sebastian, from the delightful fluff of the "Coffee Cantata" to the stunning majesty of the B minor Mass, with arrangements both inspired (Elizabeth Falconer performing lute works on the koto) and a little worrying (the Italian Concerto for pianist and tap dancer?). Ending, as it must, with the Partita No. 2 in d minor. Town Hall, Eighth and Seneca, 652-4255 or www.townhallseattle.org, 10 am-11 pm, free.

PEPE ROMERO--The fluid, emotive guitar playing of Romero has done what such fingering has always done: made for a lot of well-performed but indifferently programmed CDs with impressionistic watercolors on their cover that sell much better than I'd like. Still, there's no denying he has the chops. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 7:30 pm, 297-8788, $28 general, $20 students/seniors/SCGS members.

STOCKHOLM TO SWEDEN--Last time I checked, Stockholm was still actually in Sweden, so I've no idea what this evening's title could possibly mean. But as an affordably priced collection of new electroacoustic music from said city, it should be intriguing. Broberg, Mangs, Grippe, Pamerud, and Karlsson aim to do the home country proud. Brechemin Auditorium, UW School of Music, Room 126, 685-8384, 8 pm, $8 general, $5 students/seniors.

SUNDAY 11/12

HOPKINSON SMITH--The acclaimed lutenist in an all-Bach recital, consisting of arrangements from the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. Without questioning Smith's facility, when you consider the difference between the lyrical violin and the plucked, percussive lute, this sounds as much of a mismatch as the aforementioned tap dancers at Town Hall. Seattle Art Museum, First and University, 325-7066, 3 pm, $25 general, $16 students, $20 seniors.
