SEATTLE SYMPHONY--Emanuel Ax is one of our finer pianists, so perceptive and supportive of his collaborators that I never miss the flash and razzle-dazzle he's nearly incapable of providing. Even his Chopin is thoughtful, arguably overly mellow, but undeniably original; here's your chance to hear for yourself, with the Concerto No. 1 in e. The symphony itself performs Lullaby from Panufnik (I'm guessing the emotive, rigorously formal Andrzej, though his daughter has been making quite the name for herself recently) and Brahms' Symphony No. 2 in D, who come to think of it has a pretty famous lullaby of his own. SATURDAY 11/18

TACOMA YOUNG ARTISTS ORCHESTRA--The vibrancy of youth is exactly what you need to pull off Copland's rousing Dance Episodes from Rodeo; then again, inexperience could sink Dvorák's magnificent but over-familiar Symphony No. 9, From the New World. So what could end up splitting the difference is Cowell's lovely but not excessively taxing Hymn and Fuguing Tune No. 16. SUNDAY 11/19

ORCHESTRA SEATTLE--Haydn's Symphony No. 60, "Il distratto," is one of the wittiest, most enjoyable works from that most humorous of the great composers. (Which is what makes him the greatest, in my opinion.) Salvaged from a stage production, the work mirrors the "Absent-Minded Gentleman" of the title, rife as it is with mistunings, missed entrances, and developments that go precisely nowhere. Paired with two other playful pieces--Milhaud's lyrical Le boeuf sur le toit and Telemann's Concerto in D for three Trumpets, two Oboes, Timpani, and Strings--it highlights a quite amusing evening. MONDAY 11/20

CASCADE YOUTH SYMPHONY--Guest composer and trumpeter Allen Vizzutti performs two pieces that I'll assume are typically jazzy and properly idiomatic, if nothing else: The Rising Sun and Snow Scenes. Also Dvorák's Symphony No. 8 in G, and Berlioz's rousing Roman Carnival Overture. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 292-ARTS, 7 pm, $15.

TUESDAY 11/21

BACHMANN-KLIBONOFF-FRIEDMAN TRIO--They don't possess the catchiest moniker in the business, but this new ensemble have been getting good write-ups as they make the scene. Like most acts intent on introducing themselves to an audience, BKF are opting for a showy, eclectic program: Beethoven's haunting "Ghost" trio, Schoenfield's Café Music, and Ravel's lovely Piano Trio in a. THE LIVE ROOM--Melodic-pop band Man of the Year is both live and in the room tonight. KCMU's Abe Beeson hosts an hour-long show featuring music from and interviews with this "shoegazing pop" project. KCMU 90.3 FM, 8 pm.

SOUNDTRACK CINEMA--This week's two-hour special features the work of Thomas Newman and Graeme Revell from the movies Pay It Forward and Red Planet, respectively. Who needs to pay $8.25 to see a whiny kid anyway? KING 98.1 FM, 10 pm.
