THURSDAY 2/15

SEATTLE SYMPHONY--Isn't it time we acknowledged that Sousa wrote for a delicate, quite manageable ensemble, and that it does his music no service to distend it to full orchestra? Apparently not. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 215-4747, www.seattlesymphony.org, 7:30 pm, $17-$54. Also Fri Feb 16, 8 pm; Sat Feb 17, 2 pm and 8 pm; and Sun Feb 18, 2 pm.

SATURDAY 2/17

CITYMUSIC--Unspecified chamber pieces by romantic babbler Schumann and ragtime blatherers Bolcom and Baker. Proceeds benefit the Central Area Youth Association. Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Ave, 418-1066, 8 pm, $18 general/$14 students & seniors.

TUDOR CHOIR--Renaissance polyphony in all its many-voiced splendor courtesy of Palestrina (Lamentations, Exsultate Deo, and the inescapable Missa L'homme armé) and Josquin (Laudate pueri, Dominum, and Miserere mei, Deus). Holy Rosary Church, 4139 42nd Ave SW, 322-3118, 8 pm, $18 general/$15 students & seniors.

SUNDAY 2/18

ORCHESTRA SEATTLE AND SEATTLE CHAMBER SINGERS--The light-hearted giddiness of Monteverdi's Scherzi Musicali and Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes are curiously conjoined with the former's plangent Lamento della ninfa (its refrain of "Miserella" perhaps the most affecting moment in all Monteverdi) and Schubert's vivid, floating Mass in G, D. 167. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 3 pm, 682-5208, $15-$20 general/$10-$15 seniors/$5 students.

MONDAY 2/19

RADU LUPU--The pianist's legendary delicacy and tranquillity makes him a natural Schubertian; I'd have preferred a reading of one of the Impromptus, but won't complain about the dramatic, tragic urgency of the Sonata No. 20 in A, D. 959. Also Beethoven's "Waldstein" Sonata and Janácek's earthy On an Overgrown Path. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 215-4747, www.seattlesymphony.org, 7:30 pm, $10-$64.

TANEKO ENSEMBLE--Cornish's Ensemble-in-Residence performs works by Foss (hurrah!), Stockhausen (hooray!), Kaminsky (fine by me), Tan Dun (um, whatever), and students of the arts college. PONCHO Concert Hall, 710 E Roy, 325-6500, 8 pm, $10 general/$5 students & seniors.

WEDNESDAY 2/21

H:LÈNE GRIMAUD--It's not every teen virtuoso who lives up to their first big splash (with Rachmaninoff, no less), but Grimaud has continued to display the vibrancy and freshness that perked up so many ears a dozen years ago. This program plays to her strengths, including Brahms (Intermezzi, Op.117 and Rhapsodies, Op. 79), the Bach-Busoni Chaconne, and, of course, Rachmaninoff (Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op. 42). Meany Theater, UW campus, 543-4880 or 292-ARTS, 8 pm, $30.
