THURSDAY 7/26

SEATTLE GILBERT & SULLIVAN SOCIETY--It was the Rock and Roll (part 2) of its time: On a single night back in 1886, Gilbert & Sullivan's comic operetta The Mikado was performed in 170 cities, towns, and hamlets across the United States. The onslaught of omnipresent good clean fun continues to this day. Bagley Wright Theatre, Seattle Center, 341-9612, 8 pm, $28. Also Fri-Sat July 27-28, 8 pm.

DENNIS REA/BILL HORIST/DOUG THERIAULT--In conjunction with the Volume: Bed of Sound exhibit, three of the Northwest's most adventurous experimental guitarists serve up sonic mayhem at the Henry. More than mere skronk, Rea, Horist, and Theriault can also wrench jolting, lyrical, explosive, and mysterious music from their instruments. Doug Theriault, one-half of Portland's Office Products, rarely makes the trip to Seattle and is not to be missed. Henry Art Gallery, UW Campus, 543-2281, 7 pm, $8-$10.

FRIDAY 7/27

BETH ANTONOPULOS--For her doctoral recital, oboist Beth Antonopulos performs Copland's delicious Vocalise, Soler's Air and Variations, Persichetti's hardy perennial Parable for Solo Oboe, and Britten's Temporal Variations. Pianist I-fen Peng assists on the piano and Rebecca Henderson joins Antonopulos for Albinoni's Concerto for Two Oboes in D major, op. 9 no. 12. Brechemin Auditorium, UW campus, 685-8384, 7:30 pm, free.

SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL--Sure, I've groused about the dearth of new music at the SCMF, but I should also mention that the performances I heard this year were breathtaking. The festival's final concert is compulsively eclectic: Beethoven's Sonata for Violin and Piano op. 23, Taneyev's String Quintet op. 14, and the Phantasy for Piano and Strings by Frank Bridge, who is best known for being borrowed by Britten. You can catch a free recital of J.S. Bach's Chaconne from the Violin Partita in D minor along with Korngold's Suite from Much Ado About Nothing in the McKay Chapel at 7 pm. Lakeside School, 14050 First Ave NE, 283-8808, 8 pm, $15-$32.

SEATTLE COMPOSERS SALON--A monthly, informal presentation of new music by Seattle composers, the Salon features finished works, previews, and works-in-progress. Composer and emcee Tom Baker has corralled acoustic and electronic works by Gordon Assadi, Keith Eisenbrey, Ralph Forsland, David Mesler, Doug Palmer, Terry Wergeland, and yours truly. Seattle Mennonite Church, 3120 NE 125th St in Little Ol' Lake City, 8 pm, $5 donation.

SATURDAY 7/28

ICICLE CREEK SUMMER FESTIVAL--The Kairos Quartet, joined by pianist Francine Kay, cellist James Wilson, and clarinetist Laura DeLuca, plays chamber and klezmer music for strings, piano, and clarinet. The program includes Bruch's Eight Pieces for Clarinet, Viola and Piano, Olivero's Six Yiddish Songs, and that classic of Classical, Schubert's Trout Quintet. Sleeping Lady, 7375 Icicle Road, Leavenworth, www.icicle.org, 509-548-6347, 8 pm, $16. Also Sun July 29, 2 pm.
