"(The party) will pick up soon," a guy smirks as he spreads mayonnaise on his barbecued chicken sandwich. "Some of these girls are real lightweights. It's true. You laugh, but it's true."

Frankly, it all looks pretty okay to us at the moment: A large group of friends recently graduated from college and are about to say goodbye to the beautiful five-bedroom house they shared for the last few years. How better to say aloha—simultaneously goodbye to the old and hello to the new—than with a luau?

A vat of yummy sangria centers a table covered with tons of food, from barbecue to strawberry shortcake. Cute young men and women are wearing grass skirts, sipping margaritas, and stretching their tanned arms and legs. The talk, for a time, turns primarily around an absent friend whose embarrassing STD was just very publicly revealed in a "genital wart extravaganza." Things are relaxed, yes, but it's so very... Caribbean... that it almost seems a shame to lose the just-chillin' air. Then comes the karaoke.

Party Crasher loves karaoke. Forgoing our journalistic detachment for a bit, we take part. The real gem, though, is a young man who lets loose a curse-ridden yet weirdly touching cover of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" as backup dancers hula their hearts out. And then everybody is singing along to "Can You Feel the Love Tonight." It's one of those beautiful moments when you know everything is about to change for the majority of the people in the room, and the mood is hopeful and sad, and, yes... filled with the true meaning of aloha.
