A Crime Story

Lynnwood Boredom/Aurora/Thurs April 8/10:30 pm:

The Crime As the sun began to set, two young women and a man (all 21) walked into a family-owned Mexican restaurant on Aurora. Not far from them was the point at which Seattle and Shoreline meet. Together, the young trio (all white) ordered $59.29 worth of food and drinks. Two hours later, the trio ordered dessert and told their waiter that before crowning their meals with something sweet, they were going to step outside for an evening smoke. All three walked outside and, after lighting cigarettes, bolted to a light blue 1990 Mercury Topaz that was parked on the east side of the restaurant. The waiter, who evidently had his eye on them, pursued the trio.

Two got into the back seat, and one (female, blond, pigtails, green eyes) got into the front, behind the wheel. The blonde ignited the engine. The waiter stood in front of the car, challenging it in much the same way that a matador challenges the bulk of a bull. The bright headlights made a specter of the waiter. The waiter demanded full payment. The blonde hit the gas and the car exploded out of its parking space; the waiter leapt to the side with his life but was struck on the right hip. He spun around and almost fell. The car swerved out of the parking lot and slipped into the stream of Aurora's night traffic. However, the dazed waiter was able to determine the car's license plate number and called 911.

The Investigation Officer McNulty reports: "The DOL return for the license number that the waiter gave me registered the car to a woman who lives in the City of Lynnwood. Along with a deputy and sergeant from the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, I responded to the Lynnwood address, where I met with and spoke to a woman who turned out to be one suspect's mother. The mother explained to me that her daughter lived near N 83rd and Second Ave NE. I found the house and spoke with an upstairs renter. This man explained that he lived upstairs, and that the [suspect] lived in the basement with another girl. He said they were all renters. The blue car was not there at the time.

"The next day at 11:10 pm, I returned to the house near N 83rd and Second Ave NE with the deputy and sergeant. The blue car was in front of the house. We went to the downstairs entrance on the west side of the house. I knocked and the suspect opened the door."

The Arrest "I was expecting you," she said, as she stepped outside of the door.

"Can I come in?" asked Officer McNulty.

"No," said the blond suspect.

"Do you own the 1990 Mercury Topaz?" asked Officer McNulty.

"Yes," said the blond suspect.

"Were you at the [family-owned Mexican restaurant] last night?" asked the officer.

"I don't want to talk about it. I have already spoken with my attorney. I don't want to say anything without my lawyer," she stated and then blurted, "Yeah, we ran out without paying! I was driving, but I didn't hit that Mexican guy...."

Officer McNulty arrested her without incident.
