In response to the recent DV (domestic violence) arrest involving the now-former KEXP DJ Matt Nichols, the next two Police Beats will list a pitiful few of the great number of DV reports that are filed every day by police officers. Indeed, the sheer amount of reports concerning male aggression toward women (which are also filed as reports of harassment, disturbance, or violation of no-contact orders) is so overwhelming that one can't help but see women as a class of human beings who are under constant attack. Night and day, women of all races are threatened with letters, verbally abused over the phone, and physically struck by men of all races.

Woman Down/Downtown/Wed July 21/6:28 pm: Officer Chad writes: "A dispatch advised a female was just assaulted and was down on the ground, and the suspect was walking away, northbound on Second Ave. When I arrived, Seattle Fire Department was already there. I saw the victim sitting on the ground with blood dripping from her face. A small child, later identified as her son, was standing near her crying. I asked what happened, but it was hard to understand her due to the injury to her mouth. I was able to make out that her ex-boyfriend 'beat the shit out of [her].' I asked why he assaulted her, and she began crying. Through her sobs she said, 'I can't remember. I have lost my memory.'"

Menaced by a Crutch/Rainier Valley/Thurs July 22/1:39 pm: Officer Osburn writes: "We were dispatched to a 911 hang-up pay phone at the corner of 23rd and Rainier. When we arrived, we observed the victim standing at the phone. She told us that her ex-boyfriend had been following her around the neighborhood in his van, which was a violation of a no-contact order. She said that at 23rd Ave and Rainier Ave, the suspect exited his vehicle and began walking after her. He was on crutches, and he began waving his crutches at her, demanding her to stop. 'I'm not going to leave you alone,' he warned. She walked to a pay phone and prepared to call 911. 'Go ahead and call the police,' he said and threw two quarters at her. She did call 911, and he walked back to his vehicle and drove away."

Chained Woman/Beacon Hill/Sat July 24/12:30 am: Officer Bauer writes: " A woman entered South Precinct lobby and reported she had been assaulted this morning. She had been at a friend's house when her ex-boyfriend came over. He asked her to walk outside with him. She agreed, and they had a pleasant talk. When she stated it was time for her to return to her friend's house, he asked for a hug. She said no. He became insistent. She again refused and started walking away. He pulled a bicycle chain from his jacket and started hitting her back and her arm with it. She turned around to defend herself and he struck her thighs. Hearing the screaming, her friend came to her aid, and the man fled in an unknown direction.

"The victim had abrasions with substantial bruising on her back, both thighs, and a large bump on her right elbow."
