Sound Body/West Seattle/Tues Oct 5/3:25 am: At around 12:30 a.m., a long argument between the victim (a 24-year-old woman from Tukwila) and the suspect (her 32-year-old boyfriend) resulted in the breakup of their relationship. The two decided to find a cash machine to get money so that the Tukwila woman could rent a room in town for the night. At first, the suspect made an effort to locate a machine, but gradually it became clear that he was not heading in any particular or promising direction. He drove aimlessly throughout the West Seattle area. At a stoplight, the Tukwila woman got out of the van and stood on the sidewalk. The suspect pleaded for her to return and she finally agreed. She reentered, the door was closed, the light turned green, and the suspect continued to drive in a reckless manner.

At around 3:00 a.m., the suspect began to speak about the bible and being a child of God as he swerved onto home lawns, attempting to hit garden furniture, trash cans, and stray toys and equipment. Suddenly, he hit a tree. Everything stopped. The Tukwila woman got out of the dying vehicle and ran across the street. The suspect ordered her to get back in the van. She refused. The suspect got out of the van and again ordered her to return. She continued to walk away. After failing to physically force her to abide to his withering will, the suspect returned to the van (now dead), collected a few things, and left the scene. Several witnesses called the police.

Officer Nelson reports: "I believed the suspect was still in the area and patrol units were set up for containment. I requested a K-9 officer at 4:14 a.m. and Officer Dupleich responded at approximately 4:30 a.m. The officer's K-9 was unable to locate the suspect. At approximately 5:00 a.m., a witness advised us of a boat that was adrift in the water. The investigation at the scene showed scrape marks across a concrete boat ramp and marks in the sand as though a boat had been pulled into the water. The marks appeared to be fresh." (In the dead dark before dawn the officers and hound watched the ghost of a boat wandering the stark waters of the Sound.) "Due to proximity and time we believed that the suspect was involved with the boat. At approximately 5:09 a.m., the chief dispatcher notified the Harbor Patrol, SPD, and Coast Guard. The Coast Guard responded and secured the boat at approximately 6:09 and there was no one on board."

At exactly 9:37 a.m., the police received a 911 call regarding a body in the water. It was spotted by a kayaker who was out enjoying nature. "A witness had attempted to bring the body to shore but was unsuccessful," writes Officer Nelson. "[Another witness] used his boat and assisted in bringing the body to the shore. Witnesses had no other information. The medical examiner was notified and responded to the scene. The medical examiner verified the identity of the body as [belonging to the man who had terrorized the woman from Tukwila.]" The cause of death is under investigation.
