5 MPH/Downtown/Sat Jan 29/1:34 am: Detective G. Tomlinson reports: "We parked our unmarked car in a parking lot on the east side of First Avenue North. We could see both exits of the club at this location. We noticed a young black male with a backpack hanging out in front of the club. He was wearing a dark sweatshirt, blue shorts, and black boots. He was nervously walking back and forth on the sidewalk in front of the club, and appeared much too young to be allowed inside the club.

"At around 1:34 a.m., a gold '97 Cadillac DeVille occupied by two white males came northbound on First Avenue. As it approached the club, it slowed down to around 5 mph. The young man motioned for the Cadillac to pull around the north side of the club, into a parking lot. The Cadillac turned into the parking lot, and the young man walked up to the driver's side window, where he began to talk to the driver of the car. Because there was a juvenile loitering in front of a club known for after-hours violence, and because this juvenile was also engaging in suspicious behavior, we decided to contact him.

"We pulled directly behind the gold Cadillac and immediately the young man tried to walk away, and only returned when Detective Solan ordered him to do so. Detective Solan removed the backpack from the young man. The backpack was heavy and had the odor of marijuana. The young man attempted to leave the scene several times, and also attempted to get people exiting the club involved in our contact. No one got involved, and the two men in the Cadillac were investigated and released.

"I felt the outside of the backpack, and found there was something heavy and hard inside of it. It could have been a weapon. I opened the backpack for a further look and was overwhelmed by the powerful smell of marijuana. I could see a large quantity of the substance inside. I then told Detective Solan to place the young man under arrest for the marijuana. I later also located the heavy objects I had felt outside the backpack. They were two handguns. A 9 mm bullet was also recovered from the person. The guns both appeared functional. The marijuana was later weighed and found to be more 100 grams with a street value of $1,000. The young man is not a convicted felon, but he is 17 years old and is not allowed to own or possess a handgun. The guns both checked clear for stolen. The young man was booked into the Youth Services Center."

Admittedly there is almost nothing interesting or striking about this report. All that we see is police work--parking the unmarked car, sussing out the area, noticing suspicious activity, contacting the suspect, finding drugs and guns, making the arrest, returning to the precinct, booking the suspect, and returning to the streets to find and arrest criminal activity. What we all want out of a day's work is this kind of purity. Clearly, Detective Solan has realized the essence of his job.
