Home Grocer/Wed June 8/12:37 am: An Officer with the unfortunate surname Kaffer (it looks and sounds like Kaffir, which in black Africa is equivalent to the American racist term nigger) reports: "I was in an unmarked police van with Officer Conine and DOC Officer Bronkhorst as unit 437. I was the front passenger. While traveling southbound on Rainier Avenue South, we saw a witness standing at the north door of a convenience store on Rainier. The store seemed closed. As we drove by, we saw another male walking inside the store. We have been by this store numerous times and have never seen it open at this hour [12:30 a.m.] before. Due to the hour and the dim lights inside, we suspected a burglary was in progress.

"As we entered the store, we found seven subjects [all males, all black] inside. One was asleep behind the checkout counter, and the other subjects were asleep in various areas of the store. One subject stated the following: The grocery store is owned by another subject, who at that time was working at another job. The other subject owns the convenience store, but allows people to stay at his store for short periods of time, like a boarding-house situation.

"Two of the subjects inside the store were from Salt Lake City, Utah, one was from Des Moines, Iowa, another from somewhere in Nebraska, and two were from Seattle. Two of the subjects were leaving for Alaska the next morning. Records show that the store is not listed as a boarding house. A Polaroid photo of [the subjects] was taken and sent to the photo lab by Officer Conine."

Meat Armpits/West Seattle/Wed June 8/12:59 pm: Officer D. Kim reports: "When I arrived, I contacted the meat department manager. He explained that he had been filling up the meat case when he observed the suspect [whom we shall call Silver, as his real name also happens to be the name of a precious metal]. The meat department manager immediately recognized Silver from a previous shoplift, where Silver was caught stealing $54 worth of steak. The meat department manager observed Silver fill up a basket with four packages of steak, valued at $42.52. Silver then walked down an aisle toward the front of the store. The meat department manager walked down an adjacent aisle and caught up with Silver in the deli section. Silver's basket was empty; the steaks were gone.

"When asked where the steaks were, Silver said he put them down in the aisle. As they were walking down the aisle, Silver surrendered: He pulled two packages of steak from each armpit and gave them to meat department manager. Silver was placed under arrest for the trespass." â–
