The supporting cast of Porgy and Bess—plus a chorus of dozens—upstaged the leads on opening night. Mary Elizabeth Williams as Serena nails high notes to the wall while Gordon Hawkins, as baritone Porgy, sounds downright moribund. You should see it. Try to forget that you’re in a room full of white people watching a stage full of black actors hamming up 1930s poor-folk stereotypes. Just remember, every opera is about caricatures. This one’s just way closer to home than, say, 19th-century Spain. (McCaw Hall, 321 Mercer St, www.seattleopera.org, 7:30 pm, $25–$200)
