I used to think recycling design ideas was plagiarism, a last ditch of a dim mind, and utterly unforgivable. These days--these insular, self-referential, meta-meta days--I see borrowing as referencing, mimicry as humor, and rip-offs as an essential step in design's evolution. This Lali Puna poster gives me that warm, Saul Bass feeling, but doesn't lack the interpretative skill needed to elevate and modernize the treatment. It borrows without reliance. It confidently winks to those who'll get it, and raises two fingers to those who won't. CORIANTON HALE
