Keith Negley got his start the way many of my favorite designers did, by playing in bands and taking their DIY ethic straight to the copy shop. Eight years later he's exploring digital printing methods that emulate low-tech processes—for example, he ran this poster through a digital printer twice (once for each color) to get the look of spot-color overprinting. An expert in light-handed design, Keith often finds ways to cleverly reference or interpret the name of the band he's working for. He explains, "Subtlety is crucial. As a viewer it's much more interesting when I have to work at finding meanings as opposed to being beaten over the head with them." It takes confidence to speak softly.
